My peugeot 306 L hdi 2.0L estate,(1999), just cut out on me after it had been running o.k.
The breakdown engineer could not start it, so towed me home.
I took it to a peugeot dealer the diagnostics could not be accessed, they told me a new wiring loom + ecu MIGHT be required (cost £2400.00)
When the engine cut out there was no engine mil light on the dash, yet the engine would turn over but would not start.
Battery went flat, recharged, now engine mil light on dash, but still will not start.
I still have all dash lights, central locking, etc working.
I do not want to throw the car away, for what I think is an electrical problem, so I am now tracing the wiring and checking for earth faults.
Could the engine immobilser cause this problem?
I am also unsure if the ecu is getting a signal from the transponder? is there an easy way to check?
Any assistance would be much appreciated as the car was a very good runner up till this incident, and has only done 60,000 miles with full service history.
Thanks

As the engine failed during running I wouldn't think this was an imobiliser problem.
Check all engine bay fuses.
Does the tank fuel pump run for a few seconds after the ignition is switched on.
After that the fuel pressure has to reach a certain pressure during cranking before the injectors will be fired.
Check the plug to the pressure sensor on the fuel rail.
Other than that it's down to a diagnostic check unless you have access to a scope.
Hopefully others may have more tips.

Wow , £2400 for an ECU and wiring loom? Seems rather hefty to me - an ECU is a rather simple piece of electronics. I know they have to reprogram it and probably remove a lot of trim, dash, seats to get access to the wiring loom, but I still think thats a lot of money.

The fuel pump does run for a few seconds, I will check the pressure sensor on the fuel rail.
Thanks for the reply

If its the fuel pressure sensor on the rail unplugging it will give a default reading that is sufficient to start the car, if unplugging it wont start the car then its not the switch.
Did it just stop suddenly or was it as if running out of fuel?
Sudden stop would indicate ecu failure or crank sensor failure
Running out of fuel could indicate high pressure pump failure or broken wire to the solenoids in the pump. You need to test if the pump is actually pumping (slacken the pipe leading to the rail at the pump end and crank). If it is then it sounds like injectors arent firing so suggest a crank sensor test as per autodata or fit one from a known runner.

I will try your suggestions a.s.a.p.
It just stopped suddenly but fuel was low.
The fuel pump,(in the tank) is pumping to the filter for about ten seconds, and intermittently cuts off.
Is the solenoid in the high pressure pump housing?
Thanks for your reply

i have a xsara hdi and had a simular problem. on this 1 there are 3 fuel sensors. they all needed cleaning i was also told new fuel pump poss ecu and wiring. this actualy cost and hour of my time. 1 is located on the fuel pump under the bonnet and 2 are in line with the uel system. if i remember correctly they are all on quick release fittings and can be removed. clean them out and this might help

Cheers i haven't had chance to get on the vehicle yet i will try this and will let you know.
Thanks for the reply
