As I am travelling there will be a thud as if I have hit a speed bump. The car slows and sticks in a low gear and will not go beyond 40 mph. A message says 'check gearbox' and the red spanner shows on the dashboard display. Once I pull over and stop the car and then re-start everything is OK until the next time I experience this problem ( it used to be infrequent, now it happens every hundred miles or so ).

I have had it in to the garage and they have plugged it into the diagnosis machinery, but no faults ever show up. One of the service people suggested that it might be a solenoid, but, beyond that they don't seem to have any ideas. Has anyone else experienced this or can offer help?

Barry48, i know it sounds bizzare but check the rear light clusters, check the operation of the side & brake light & replace the bulbs. check the holders for damp/corrossion!
A fault with the rear lights can effect the auto box & throw it into limp mode, normally sticks in 3rd. then a restart clears it. It may well be an internal fault but I have had problems with Renault autios cause by rear light clusters in the past.

@Injection Doc: Can you kindly elaborate on how you solved DP0 Limp Mode problem caused by Rear Light Clusters. I have a 2002 Scenic 2L Auto in Limp Mode. Changed the ATF but no change. Rear light clusters were always acting up causing instrument cluster to dim when brakes applied - tried cleaning contacts on clusters but still the same. Kinda desperate now.

Cheers

I eventually left the car at the garage who kept running it until the fault occurred and then put it on the diagnostic equipment. It did turn out to be a fault with the solenoid in the automatic gearbox, which means stripping the gearbox and replacing it.. The total cost is almost £700.

When I bought the car I was told that there was no 3 year warranty on it and the problem began a week or two before it was 3 years old. Because I did not appreciate the significance of the 3 years I didn't try to book into the garage until about 2 days after the 3 years expired and it went into the garage 10 days after the years was up. Only then did I find out from the garage that it had in fact had a 3 year warranty that had just run out.

They advised me to cantact Renault Customer Services and explain the situation. They have agreed to pay 55% of the costs, leaving me with a bill for £312, on the basis that it was only just out of warranty when I first took it to the garage and it has a low mileage. Since it was my fault that it did not go into the garage before the warranty expired I consider this a good settlement and would praise Renault for their handling of this

The AL4 /dpo auto box suffers from defective pressure solinoids ,along with people /reno thinking that these units can run on dex 11 /111,they can't they have to have fully synthetic fluid like the VW units ,over heating is caused by wrong fluid + poor designed cooling system ,plus if you don't have a drain plug and only have a level plug you can't flush the box ,all the debris from the clutches and metallic particles just go around the system eating into bearings, bushings, and seals ,any automatic should have the fluid changed at 30,000 miles!

If you trip the fluid sensor the unit will trip out and lock out ,its a crap design !
I know I bought one for the wife !
