Number Plates on UK Cars - Kayseypops
Many cars now have deliberatly scruffy numberplates - that is the numberplate appears to have a stain on it. I assume this is to fool the speed cameras. Does it work and don't the police stop and warn for this offence?

Many plates are not well made/sealed. Moisture gets into the top of the plate, dribbles into the lamination and leaves a vertical stain. It is technically illegal but I don't think it fools ANPR or GATSOs; it is probably a fixed penalty but is less dangerous than using a hand-held mobile on the move or not wearing a seat belt

As AS says, this is not deliberate. It happened on the missus's clio. Lamination came away slightly on the top in two places, water and dirt gets in, spreads and hey presto unreadable plate. It finally got an MOT advisory so I changed it.

My rear plate had to be changed to get through last year's MoT because of this.

Sons number plates were badly affected so decided that the MoT station ( now does replacement plates ) would get the task at the same time as the MoT test.

I still had to provide ALL the documentation even though they took the old plates off scrapped them fitted the replacement ones.

Rules is rules!l

Bring back the old pressed aluminium plates, I say. No delamination problems, and they withstand parking nudges without cracking! Why were they ever dropped?

Because they aren't reflective I'd guess

Legal, reflective, pressed alloy plates are still available. Saw them a few years back while looking for my third set of plates for the Passat.

Legal pressed ali reflective plates are available as are plates with riveted numbers(Framptons);I bought a new car a few years ago and the dealer told me that they rejected the first set of plates made for it-already delaminating.

I have pressed alloy, black and silver plates on the old car.
They're not as durable as you'd think..
I've just bought a new front one as the old one was letting the car down with all it's stone chips and creases around the bolts where it's caught on something high, like a high kerb when end-on parling. It hangs down under the bumper on 2 brackets.

When I got my G-reg 205 a few months ago I was pleasantly surprised to find it still had the plates fitted by the original supplying dealer (now long gone, or taken over). They are branded 'Platemaker' and even the front one is hardly marked. Admittedly the car has run on a 'cherished' plate for about 10 of its 19+ years, but even so, those plates have lasted well.

What I do with new plates, is while the protective plastic coating is on, mix up some fast setting Araldite, and run a seam of it round the plate with your finger (use gloves). This seals it up and plates last ages. It's a thin coating and it's invisible when on. Leave them overnight to dry-Bingo.
