Just been looking at one of these s/h - very nice and not expensive s/h. Anyone any views on running these long-term/high mileage - since it's not even a PD engine, a better high-mileage engine?

First job - ask how much a cambelt change is.
Briskoda website will be worth a visit for more info.

The 2.5 TDI is a lovely engine, but I remember reading tales of woe on this forum about expensive repairs on older examples.
I wish they'd put the 3.0 TDI V6 into the current Superb, especially the forthcoming Combi estate. Maybe they're afraid it would steal sales from Audi - which it would, wouldn't it.

Unfortunately no V6 diesel is likely to make it's way to the Superb as it's based on the current Passat platform (itself an extension of the Golf Platform) not the Audi MLP (A4/A5/Q5) platform. There aren't any V6 engines made for VW's Transverse engine platform bar the 3.2VR6 which isn't strictly a true V6 anyway.

I considered one years ago (Passat but no difference) so rang two VAG independents and asked them exactly what you asked here. They both said avoid the V6, it is a horror engine and if you go for the auto expect additional trouble. They both said go for the 1.9PD with the 130 bhp, manual box.

Is it the same 2.5 engine as in the Tourareg? A colleage is having a new engine in his at 80K miles as neither VW nor 2 independents can figure out what's wrong with it.

On top of that, it was meant to be very uneconomical and with only modest increased performance compared to the 130Tdi 4-cyl.

A good friend had the B5.5 Audi A6 with the 2.5 V6 TDI and it was horribly noisy and vibratory, it made my B5.5 Passat PD130 seem refined by comparison
It added injury to insult by lunching the injection pump, which killed the engine.
