Hi all
I wonder if GM negotiations will lead to the safeguarding of all the jobs at Vauxhall or if tons will be lost still?
The Business Secretary promises these people he will fight for their jobs, but will it be enough?
I truly hope so because loosing a workforce of 5000 is downright horrid!!!
Surely that is part of the deal (do continue with old staff). If I were into manufacturing in the automotive industry I would try and get skills training for green vehicles. But will their really be a low carbon economic area in the North East?
Sorry for the 20-question?I find it extremely interesting.
Cheers
Danny

I always find it rather difficult to see how politicians can "fight for British jobs" in this country...by doing what? Err talking assertively to a foreign buyer who hardly has been to the sites in question....like they are going to listen to a minister...
The only thing that Mandelsen can do is bribe the buyer with money and then they might pay attention.
In the grand scheme of things I think vauxhall plants in the UK will be closed by end 2010. Why would you keep them open? GM Europe needs them like a hole in the head and ditching far flung plants in countries which are not giving them money will be first to close I think to allow production to be sustained in German plants where they are being given money.

I know?.he added something like he won?t go on holiday until the matter clears. Seriously?
You make a good point but I don?t want to believe it just yet. I am still naive enough to hope for something better for these people. What are they suppose to do in the meanwhile?hang around until they get sacked?!
The ministers of this country should start speaking facts and make substantial promises or leave it be.

GM Jobs in the UK are doomed,
The germans are putting money in, and will have say on where the jobs go. The UK gov is not, and wont.
GM jobs in the uk were under threat anyway, they had to loose a plant in europe, and keeping one plant off mainland europe with all the supply chain issues and costs that brings was always going ot make elsmere port risky.

This clearly shows that the government doesn't want to support any form of manufacturing in the UK any more.
Maybe that's how the UK can fall in line with the kyoto protocol by 2020 !
No manufacturing, no large emissions !
roll on, roll on. the UK will just be a services based country with no manufacturing at all
