Any ideas on how the fuel gauge on escort finess estate is stuck on 3/4 full. The needle hasn't moved and i know there's a problem cos i ran out of petrol the other day, and the gauge still said 3/4.

probably the float got stuck as you went over a speed bump

If it goes to zero with the engine off, as bell boy says, stuck float, it it doesn't, gauge
|
A broken wire to the float sensor will give the same fault. If I recall, the fuel gauge does not drop to zero when ignition is turned off.hth

The gauge doesn't move when turning off the ignition. I presumed it would fall to zero but obviously not.

Filled car up full yesterday, when i started up the needle moved from 3/4 to full. Since then i've done about 30 miles and the needle moves a wee bit then goes back to full again. When parked on flat surface it stays on full.

My 97 1.8 Escort has a constant readout fuel gauge, ie it shows the amount of fuel in the tank all the time, even when the ignition is off and the car is locked up outside my house (I always thought this would encourage theft of either the petrol or the whole car although it hasn't happened yet!)
I find after filling the tank to the brim, it takes 70-100 miles for the needle to come down off the full mark. It swings slightly higher on left-hand bends and slightly lower on right-hand bends, a consequence of the fuel sloshing around in the tank I imagine. I would drive a couple of hundred miles and see if your sticking gauge problem has resolved itself with a full tank to lift the float clear of the blockage.

My "V" Escort's gauge goes to zero when you turn off the ignition.

Just back from work and the needle is now below the full mark, just hope its giving a proper reading to whats actually in the tank will keep an eye on it, don't want to get caught out again. Thanks for all the advice.
