Trying to see if my old car is still on the road. I checked with the government tax website and it says car cannot be found. The reg and make is correct. However it has records for all the cars we have had since 1984.
What would cause the DVLA to suddenly not have a record of it? I am just interested to know what has happened to it.

It has probably been scrapped. If it existed it would be on there.
|
Or registration changed to a private plate?
|
Possibly but I sold the car for £250, it was a rusted 13 year old Fiesta in base spec trim.

|
But all the other cars which have been scrapped inc one in 1984 are all listed as unlicenced. Even my first Firsta (rattle) is listed.

I think the Taxdisc records start from the A prefix in 1983. I too have checked many previous vehicles - all have been there, tho most are shown as Due March 2004 (for example) which I presume means they were scrapped about that date. I'm not sure what happens with a car whose original reg. was replaced with a 'cherished' number and later switched back again.

Having checked various spamcan vehicles it seems SWMBO's current Zafira doesn't show up, and neither does a former Omega - in both cases they were personal imports showing 'Opel' on the V5

from memory....prior to SORN, if a car had no dealings with DVLA, then after 4 years, it disappeared off the system
so in the old days if you had something interesting and you'd had it locked away for a while, you sometimes had problems using the original plate...nowadays you're supposed to SORN it, so that in theory shouldn't happen...bet it does though
|
Keep checking - no doubt they'll have recycled the plate into a nice little plonker plate for someone !

That may be true of the DVLA. I have checked www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc for a 1983 Cavalier estate I owned from 1984-88 - it shows Date of Liability 01 06 1997 , which I presume corresponds roughly to its scrapping date. It had done 70K when I part-ex'd it. So the record is there for at least 10 years.

Checked my second company car (Vectra on an N plate). According to DVLA it's been exported. Who'd export a 1996/N 1.8LS Vectra in 2008?
|
Possibly just gone to Ireland or even Northern Ireland.
I can't see any value in my old plate at all it was NXXX MBW so not exactly an exotic reg. I've filled in the reg in one of them history sites and it comes up as a Fiesta 1.3 Encore which is what it was. I wonder if the DVLA randomly loose records?

I wonder if the DVLA randomly loose records?<<<
um ,,, yes including entitlements on driving licences
(allegidly)
|
Which is why I intend to scan mine in before I send it off for renewal.

"my old plate was NXXX MBW so not exactly an exotic reg"
Maybe it was purchased by a dyslexic BMW enthusiast?
|
Yep I did think of that myself.

There's a slightly weird story in the Saturday paper HJ about a Renault on a personal plate which was scrapped after an accident in France.
A new Renault was bought and the plate put onto that, but when sale time came the plate was found to be related to the previous scrapper.
I can't see how the plate got onto the second car, the first being scrapped. Can anyone else?
