Accident after safety recall brake work - dombrooks
Early this week my wife's car had some work done on the brakes due to safety recall. The safety recall said that the brakes could fail.

Today she had a minor accident and she said the breaks didn't seem to work properly.

What's the correct course of action to take now?

I think I would ring VOSA and ask them.

If possible get the car MOT'ed or inspected by the RAC / AA to establish whether the brakes are working.

You or your insurers may have a claim against the garage if you can establish that the brakes are not working.

Was the brake malfunction evident between picking the car up and having the accident?

The work was done on Tuesday.

I drove it on Wednesday and commented that the brakes didn't feel great to me.

The garage that made the brake modifications was a Ford main dealer.

The garage due to do the accident repairs are a different dealership Ford main dealer.

Is it reasonable to get the accident repairer to do the check?

have you voiced your concerns to your insurer as already mentioned?
i would do this before i let another garage touch ANYTHING
Accident after safety recall brake work - dombrooks
the insurance company were rather blase about it.

im shocked at that
is it a two bob internet one or a well known one
this will affect your no claims yes?
i think i would be looking for a possible independant inspection and a legal angle if it does indeed show something was at fault

seeing as the original garage arent aware of the problem can i suggest a one to one with them,i know someone who got a new car for old as a result of a very bodged repair and the dealer wanted it out of the tabloids

Could OP tell us the nature of the accident and how the brakes caused/influenced it? Was it wise to allow his wife to drive the car if he had some concerns about the brakes prior to the accident/

> Was it wise
In hindsight no, but when you have brake work done, it can sometimes feel different / spongey etc.

The accident was by all accounts very simple - two cars coming down a rural lane, both breaked, 3rd party stopped, and my wife's car (not going fast by all accounts) just wouldn't stop.

Insurance company are now recommeding getting the repairer to inspect the brakes at our expense.

if it was me, and my insurers seems uninterested, I'd whisk the car to my local indie MOT garage or a recognised Tyre/Brake/Exhaust place and get them to perform a routine brake test. If its not up to the job get them to write a report on why they think there's a fault.

If no joy from the insurers, contact the ombudsman and sue the dealer for any losses in the small claims court.

ps did they change pads and discs?

New parts can take a while to bed-in hence the braking seems less efficient at first.

I may be wrong on this but I thought VOSA run mot testing stations where you can get your car tested !! it may be a good idea to contact them and ask what options you would have !!

Accident after safety recall brake work - Another John H
At a complete tangent to the above -

Wet for the first time in days around here. Very greasy roads to catch out the unwary. Unexpectedly large stopping distances, regardless of ABS.

just a thought.

That's a fair point and one which had crossed my mind.
I'll need to improve my interrogation skills when cross-examining the missus.

The Ford garage doing the repair are going to have a look and see if they think a brake specialist should investigation.

I once had problems with my MGF after it had new pads.
Driving it on an 'airfield day' - it could only do about 4 emergency stops out of 5. The instructor took the car out because he couldn't believe the extremely long stopping distances I occasionally had - he had the same problem. Foot hard on the pedal - rock solid brake pedal, no ABS action - but very long stopping distance.

This wasn't brake fade !

It went to 3 different specialists before the problem was resolved - with new disks and pads.
Not one of those specialists could say what the problem was - in fact, 2 out of the three didn't even find a problem.

I now try an emergency stop every so often just to make sure the car can do one. (the MGF has long gone)

Good luck with resolving your braking problem on the S-MAX
