91 2.0 Erratic idle at tickover - dodo
My old Merc 230TE auto (J reg) has started to 'hunt' on tickover when warmed up. It goes from 1000-1500 revs but is consistent ie it keeps going. Up for MOT soon so wonder would a good petrol additive (is ther one?) help things along? Cheers Dodo

Does your car have a catalytic convertor?

Your problem will not be fixed by pouring gloop into the tank - don't waste your money.

How do I know? Not very car literate!

Follow the exhaust pipes down from the engine to the first box on the system - if on that run of pipework you find a cylindrical part screwed into the side of the pipe with some wires coming out of the end, you have a catalytic convertor system.

Either way, if you aren't car literate, you're better off asking for recomendations of a good MB independant specialist in your area.

Thanks - alas I live in avery rural area and more Massey Ferguson specialists around here than Merc ones. Yes I think it has a cat which probably renders a very nice old classic in good condition worthless or scrap. Then again there the scrappage scheme ...new Golfs £9995! tempted

Just because the cat has been mentioned doesn't mean it's necessarily at fault - it's just a way of understanding exactly what car we're dealing with. Don't panic!

There may be a fuel tank vent valve (in MB speak, a regeneration valve) fitted to cat cars which pulses, and, if the vacuum pipes have come off this, or are perished, it can give this kind of symptom. The valve, if fitted, is on the passenger side inner wing, and has a thin vacuum pipe going to it from the inlet manifold. It's worth 5 minutes to check this before doing anything more involved - the quickest way to check it is to temporarily block the vac pipe from the manifold, and see if this stabilises the tick over.

Many Thanks! I will investigate after work tomorrow and let you know. The rest of the car is in excellent condition and has served us well for many years and i think is now gaining classic status.
