Mums car has just passed 40k now which works out at just over 10k per year from new.
Mpg on the V6 manual comes in at around the 26 mpg mark in mixed driving, rising to 34 on long runs.
We have had some issues though which sort of fly in the face of the usual Hyundai reputation, heres the list:
1. Alarm system had constant troubles so they ripped it out and replaced with a new upgraded one.
2. ABS pump replaced after a freak incident where the ESP light lit up going up hill on a dry road, while accelarating up the hill in top gear followed by the ABS activating grinding the car to a halt. Turned off and on again all was well but work done as precaution.
3. ESP light has recently come on a few times while stationary so its going to be looked at.
4. One of the rear speakers was intermittantly loosing sound - its booked in and they have already told us they will be replacing the whole system and have already taken down the spec so they can order a new one even without it having gone in yet.
5. The climate control system appears to have gone kaput. The fan controls give no control over the lowest three settings, the OFF button doesnt turn it off at all and most annoyingly, unless the fan is on level 4 or higher, the fan surges up and down speeds.
It must be said though that Hyundai seem to have no issue with warranty issues and there is never a hint of having to argue your case.
The car itself mum loves but myself I dont much like the stiff gearbox or heavyish steering, plus the arkwardness of getting in and out of it!

Although the fault tally is a little disappointing, it sounds like the support is excellent. That's half the battle I think.
We very nearly bought one of these when we were looking for a fun car for SWMBO a few years ago. Our shortlist eventually came down to one of these, or a Mazda MX-5. The soft top won out in the end.
I've always liked these cars though.

My friend Nicky's hyundai coupe blew up it's ecu for the engine at 18k!!!

Indeed, its the dealer support that is key, along with a manufacturer warranty department that doesnt hold back. It means that on the odd occasion that something does happen, you feel your working with rather than against those who will be fixing your car. When your car goes wrong, the last thing you want is to fight to get it fixed aswell.
It was for this reason in the main that we didnt look at a Fiat Grade Punto when replacing the misses car, which we liked alot. Car was nice, but dealers variable and Fiat not the most forthcoming with warranty claims. Put us right off.

As expected the list of faults is all electrical.
Climate control (how many more idiotic buzzwords can they dream up) is a big no no for me, and i've yet to see a mass market car more than a few years old where the thing hasn't given trouble one way or another.
No mechanical faults as one would expect from Hyundai.
Many of us here seem to be of the opinion that the best long term cars were made in the 80's and 90's, does this admittedly small list of quickly and efficiently repaired faults add weight to those views.
You've shattered my rosy Hyundai view Stu.

The digital climate control on our (albeit soon to be replaced 92K) 2000 Primera has worked flawlessly since we bought the thing
......shame about the coil packs/abs sensor/rusty tailgate/dodgy windscreenwiper mechanism/loose gearknob etc etc though !

Love the Hyundai Coupe as affordable and sporty alternative to the inevitable Focus so grateful for this info Mr Stu. A bit disappointing really, despite the lack of mechanical faults but nice to know their customer care is as good as rumoured and that yer mum still loves it.

You can forgive a car that looks that good almost anything

I have to say, its just not my kinda car, so maybe Im a little negative about it, but if I could change anything about my mums car, it would be to have it as an auto as the engine is torquey enough to cope and 6 gears feels too much most of the time.
On the plus side, the boot is big and can fit a wheelchair in due to its excellent shape and we have done long journeys 4 up with just some sunburn to the tops of people in the backs heads! Worth also noting that despite its cheap price for what it is, trim is very hardwearing and leather has cracked far less than cars I clean that cost 4 times as much. It certainly wears well and paint quality is excellent.
What did impress us was how much of an interest Hyundai took in the ABS pump issue - there was daily contact between dealer and Hyundai of which we were always kept in the loop as Hyundai fired back suggestions to the dealership about what to check and what parts to change. It was two weeks before they reached a conclusion, but in that time we had a top of the range diesel Sonata ( nice car in real world use btw ) as a loan car, not some pokey little hatchback.

It's a bit too flash for me really, apart from silver and I'd be looking at the 2.0SE, not the fast one. I never use 5 doors or put the seats down and fancy the idea probably more than the reality! I'm thoroughly intrigued, rather than smitten but getting a 2006 one for £8k would mean a useful 2 years' outstanding warranty - one that's worth something too.
The shortlist is Focus, Hyundai Coupe, Civic. I just hope my Focus will hold out while I take another 6 months to decide...yawn.

I must admit, I prefer the latest shape and it has many little useful improvements that are things as an owner you think ' I wish this was like that' and funny enough, that was what they changed!
Mum likes the latest shape but she will be replacing it when the warranty runs out next summer with what is likely to be an Impreza diesel so long as its available by then. Either that or a Mini Clubman diesel, she cant stand run-of-the-mill cars!

Got to say i quite fancied one a few years ago with the black leather interior, then i sat in one and would have prefered my old jps capri back

Have had a 2.0SE since autumn of 2006 and it's been fab. Nice drive and totally reliable for me. Used one or two tyres which has been only drawback , done 32000 in that time.

I was following a black V6 Hyundai coupe up the A24 the other week. Stuck in the outside lane for miles at a mere whisker over the (unnecessarily low) limit, either unaware of or indifferent to the scruffy Escort waiting patiently in its mirrors at a courteous and safe distance. Driver was a bit busy at the steering wheel too, or was one of these involuntary twitchers.
