Yes it's true, next door neighbour's bill for 2 new Michelins on 18 inch alloys, new shape Mondeo estate diesel. Makes a bit of a mockery of running costs for "Mondeo man"!! Mental note to check the hidden costs before buying next car!
|
Or go to your local tyre stockist and ask the price first!!
|
Clearly didn't bother to shop around. I've just had to spend £320 on two Michelins for my car. I had quotes for the same tyre at around £520 a pair.
Local tyre chain matched an internet price after a bit of haggling.
|
I just got two Michelins for 17" rims for £260 on an Accord. Local place matched the internet.

It's symptomatic of the costs of running a Mondeo type car. The list price of Mondeos, C5s etc can easily reach 20k+. Whilst many of us buy cars like these 'nearly new' at a huge discount on the list price, the parts costs of these cars reflects their original price, not what we paid for them.
The current trend for large tyres which that do any favours for ride comfort is something that really pushes up the cost of tyre changes. I hope that the push for economy might see the return of more sensible tyre sizes in future.

bring back the 155x13
comfortable hard wearing and only $9.31 for a remould
|
Some of these tyre sizes for standard run of the mill repmobiles are getting absurd.
I'm sure i delivered an Insignia on 20" tyres t'other day and 19" seems to be the standard size.
|
My tyre machine cant cope with these sizes and i have to pay a man that can :-(
You cant beat two tyre levers a manual bead breaker and a tourniquet to keep you fit while you fit a flattened 155x13 can you
|
>>old hack reporting from a modern car with mp3 player and air con and decent engine/transmission/brakes
What size tyres does it have? ;>)
|
195 55 15 i think
i did them all by hand late last year and managed to put one small mark on one rim :-(
my local tyre man wanted $60 so that stayed in my slush fund
even my bubble balancer worked on these rims
|
Two tyres on my Corsa £65 for the pair and they are not the cheapest of the budget stuff either. I good of got cheap and nasty wongsunwicongs for £40 a pair.
|
The last tyre I bought for my Mondeo cost £33.
|
...a manual bead breaker and a tourniquet to keep you fit while you fit a flattened 155x13....
Try removing a rear tyre from a farm tractor with a manual bead breaker if you want some exercise. :)

I used to get a lot of tractor tyres to fit and repair, never had aproblem with them as the size is huge and the carcase quite slender and supple....earthmovers could be a little harder when the tyre's as big as me.;)
The really difficult ones to separate are the really old crane tyres where the wheel was extended right up the side of the tyres leaving only about 2" of tyre showing above the wheel around the circumference....the idea being that the tyre would push down into the wheel and that where movement stopped...very handy for moving heavy loads around a yard with a relaitively inexpensive and smallish crane.
We tried for ages to remove these by hand....in the end we put 2 chains around the outsides and pulled them apart with 2 lorries.
I've still got a bead breaker and levers...and i'd be intersted to know where to lay my hands on a bubble balancer BB.

Ive seen them on that internety auction site gb, do a google as ive seen them somewhere else for around $50, i got mine from a local garage that was upgrading, its the second one ive had, they were both made in the usa (first one stolen )
I watched a mechanic struggling to get a solid tyre onto a rim the other week, it was off something non motor related but anyway he was struggling and risked either severing a finger or splitting the tyre,i suggested he drilled out the 4 rivets on the rim and refitted the tyre and bolted the rim back together,he had the job done in 10 minutes after that, just shows sometimes you need a new pair of eyes to look at something so obvious.

Oh so true!
I hate to think of the times I've been so blinkered. I've sweated and struggled.
I've now learnt to to sleep on it - It's probably quicker.

Thanks BB, i'll have a goosey, i did look there for spinner balancers before but the cost for my occasional use was too much.

Well BB, you've done me proud many thanks, i've logged that onto me fav's and will peruse at leisure when i haven't done a 14.5 hour day...
I think the new career of 'personal shopper' suits you rather well, will you specialise in purchasing for the discerning motorist..;)

I was wondering what the skinniest tyres you get on a fairly new vehicle are: I often see a 55 plate small Citreon van - berlingo size- that looks like it has 155 / 13 or something like that on it - look like pram wheels these days.
|
I found a pair of wheels in a ditch fitted with 145/70X13s.
|
Could these be the smallest tyres available for a 'motoring' application?.....I ordered a pair of tubes for 2.5 inch wheels from my tyre man and they came the following day.
He thought I might have trouble fitting them until I told him they were going on split rims ! Any ideas what they were for ?

Some kind of model car...radio controlled maybe...
|
Some BR members have asked about finding reliable bangers for less than that...:-)
|
Not a model...tyres have very rugged tread, can be legally used on road. a virtual bun for the winner ! HeHe.
My Renault van runs on 135/13...Colway remoulds. seem very good quality.
Jowett has 500x16 cross plies...still available about £80. Avon HM Tourist on one side of tyre, Dunlop C41 on other, for purists who want to match older ones.

Youll be looking for something different at renewal time. Colway went bust about 18 months ago.

Baby buggy?
I was in a queue at a well know dept store a few months back behind an exasperated mum who needed a new tyre or tube for her £700 travel system, ony to be told that it was a discontinued model and they couldnt get them anymore.

"Some BR members have asked about finding reliable bangers for less than that...:-)"
My current car cost less than that, with 12 months MoT, bought three weeks ago, and it's about the same size as a Mondeo.

£700 for a pram! You could put a car seat on a self propelled lawn mower (blade removed) and fit a satnav for less.
My car uses the same size tyres (W rated Michelins) £78 fitted.

Missed the edit - Not the same size.

OK, time to confess...nobody wins the bun !
Tubes were for the two little 'tractor' tyres on my caravan mover !

Probably not very welcome around John Lewis, and I wouldn't like to have to fold it into the boot of a Fiesta :)

Have recently used e tyres, decent price and very good service too.
