Until recently I drove trucks for a living and had filled up at BP garages three or four times a week, saving the BP Premier Points. When I managed to get a balance of the card it only showed £7.50 on it, which did not match the amount of fuel bought/cash spent/points saved.
I complained to Premier Points, who informed me that VERY often, you pays for yer fuel by BP Card and hands over yer PP card. Thing is, the cashier's usually putting your card into the machine when you're signing your receipt. Ergo, your points never actually go on your card, they go on his own one when you're heading out the door.
Apparently this is happening in epidemic proportions. Ensure it doesn't happen to you if you're collecting points.

I bought BP today and the nice lady told me it ends on Monday anyway. They are coming up with a new card tied in with Sainsburys Debenhams, and Barclaycard. See www.nectar.com/
You will still be able to use your card until sometime in 2004, if I was listening right.
Same principle about theft off your card will probably apply though.
