Can anyone suggest what might be wrong when the digital display for mileage and trip-ometer suddenly vanishes! The fuse is OK as it also runs the hazard lights etc and they are fine.
Is it a major job?

Maybe the backlighting bulb for the display has blown, if its a bulb?

If it is the backlight as SVP suggests, it's not too major a job, unlike the Vectra/Omega.
Two Phillips or Torx screws hold the speedo cowling in place - remove. With a bit of fiddling this then can be removed by jiggling between the gap of the dashborad and steering wheel. It is tight, but will come out.
More screws/torx hold speedo housing to dashboard, IIRC.
Finally lift a lever to release speedo housing. No speedo cable to worry about as it is electronic and all the power comes from an electrical multisocket which disconnects when you lift the lever. Again jiggle housing between dash and steering wheel.
Look around back of speedo housing. It is a standard small instrument bulb. Twist and remove. You might find the the bulb is soldered/crimped to the holder connection so you'll have to replace the whole holder/bulb assembly. You can get the bulb out, but just as cheap to replace whole assembly.
While you're at it, you might want to consider replacing all the other bulbs?
Refit speedo in the reverse way you removed it.
Note, Vauxhall main agent quoted £50 to do this job[1]. Took me 15 mins.
[1] good money making racket. No wonder Vauxhall won't fit an LED display. Sooner use a 20th century LCD display and 19th century bulb configuration!!

Thanks for the advice! Not sure I can handle this myself but at least I know what to expect.
Cheers
Let's just hope it IS only that :O)

If you look carefully, you should "just" about see the display if the LCD display is still working. Try shining a torch on it. The failure of the backlight bulb is a common fault. The bulb is illuminated from the moment you turn the key until you remove the it again. That is why I could never understand Vauxhall using such a primative design, apart from making money to change it for you of course.
Once you've got the cover off, it's no more difficult than changing a brakelight bulb.

yes! and not to mention the design of them hanging the fuses where they are BOUND to become dislodged. Strange british design. I think I will give it a go this weekend. Thanks :O)

This sounds too simple to be true but, have you turned the instrument dimmer down accidentally. I found this out after my 2001 astra had been in at the local dealers for some (totally unrelated) warranty jobs doing, they had dimmed the instrument lighting (for some strange reason or accidentally) and the odometer reading virtually disappeared.
