Gents,
Anyone got any info on running costs per mile of
Audi A4 automatic 140bhp v Audi A3 manual 140bhp.
Really like the A4 but need too see if the auto will kill my mileage allowance of 11p for either
Any help appreciated

What purchase price have you been looking at. Running cost has to include depreciation otherwise it's a pointless comparison. But you also need to include service costs, MOT, tyres, insurance, any loans, etc. otherwise the comparison is not a true on.
Edit: Is this allowance for miles in addition to an allowance of a payment in lieu of company car or similar? If you get nothing towards the car then 11p is too low for covering the cost of using a car for business purposes.

Depending on model "Whar Car" quote around 55p and 40p per mile respectively. However that's based on buying new. Cost will vary if you are buying used. Once they're a few years old the difference would be quite narrow I suspect.
I know its not what you asked but these are very different cars. I've had an A3 Quattro 5 door on test this weekend. Its been great fun - its the 200hp DSG petrol version but its much too small - even in the front. Left leg space is very limited. Its also got other quirks I didnt like - such as you can only access the handbrake if you leave the central armrest lid up and the cruise control is not all logical (and I've never had any issue with the many other cars I've driven with cc). I have no recent experience of the A4 but, particularly if space is important, you should consider if you need the A4 to meet your needs.

I'd cover fuel cost on my Mazda6 diesel at 11p (maybe). Nothing else covered. It's a company car. If all I got per mile was 11p I would not be happy. We actually have a fuel card scheme now so pay for personal mileague via salary (not too complicated and works in my favour - personal is local and business is motorway so pro-rata I win).
But checking mileage rates if I didn't have the fuel card (e.g. car got before the scheme changed)... diesel Mazda6/Ford would be 13.95pence/mile.
So 11p is too low regardless. The figure of 13.95p/mile would be based on someone having a fully expenses (apart from fuel) company car. You could even claim for wiper blades (but not oil for topups).

Sorry guys,
This is a co car v cash option
Get £460 mth allowance at 40% tax payer
based home so all fuel at 11p per mile will be re claimed + tax return on 40p/25p gov allowance.
Really just looking at how much extra i would expect to get out of manual 140bhp re auto
The A4 IS £14,500 WITH 23K
A3 Is £14,250 with 15k.
typical the allowance is 14p for ABOVE 2.0litre as this is 2.0l stuck with 11p

My allowance if I opt out is based on car grade.... I could opt out and get a tiny car and get the same as an AMG Merc.

If this is the 2.0 TDI A4, the auto is Multitronic (CVT) - negligible extra fuel consumption over a manual.
|
I have an A4 1.9TDi with the multitronic box. Over 62,000 miles and 4 years I reckon I have got about 45mpg in real driving - some days it might be 80mph+ on motorways (not UK) for maybe 500 miles and at others only 30 miles in day of stop start town traffic.
This is about 10 miles to the litre, so depending on the price of diesel the fuel element alone has cost me maybe 9p to 11p per mile.
I'm thinking of renewing it and I've just worked out it's cost me another 19p per mile in depreciation (not including loss of interest on capital) - ouch!

To the original poster,
You really need to work out the real overall costs. You can claim back the tax on the allowance you get (that's tax not the total amount). This is not a simple comparision.
To work out all involved maybe try cash or car and then used adapted figures for a second hand car?

And why chose the same engine but with a manual box in one and an auto in another?
My A3 170 DSG does around 40mpg round town, on a decent run it will do up to 50 mpg - I've done mid 50s during a holiday in Scotland.
DSG and CVT have similar mpg to manual - in my experience of manual and DSG in an A3 I have always managed better mpg from the DSG.
DSG is to be available in the A4 sometime this year.

Considering the A3 has a 55 litre tank and the A4 a 70 litre I'd be interested to know how you worked the 100 mile figure out.
A4 auto fuel figures - 36.2 60.1 48.7
A3 manual - 40.4 62.8 52.3
