Hi
Can you help. I have the above car and it has recently started cutting out and leaving me in some dangerous positions. It just stops after a lot of 'clicking' noises from the right hand side of the dash. Sometimes it will start after several attempts, with a bit of smoke coming from the exhaust. Other times it will start and let me rev then cut out again. When I start in the morning there is a whistling noise from the engine when I accelerate away. I have changed the fuel relay fuse after speaking to VAG however this has not worked. The car is completely standard. I again broke down this morning, went back an hour later and it started and drove fine. Any ideas that may help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Tony

Try checking the ignition switch. I had to replace 2 on my Mk iii.
|
Thanks I will try that

check the light rubber breather pipe that comes up from the lower sump area ( at front of engine cam belt end) to the cam cover. They are prone to spliting causing too much air to get in allowing the engine to stall at random The ticking noise may be from the fuel purge valve in O/S/F wing if fitted

Thanks I will check that as well

This could be the X relay, thus the clicking, and is often the cause of the problem. Then this relay shuts down it is as though you have turned the ignition off. The relay is in position 16 and the contacts could be burnt or a dry joint. If this is the proplem you will notice that everything stops, the heating fan, the redio, the wipers etc. etc. Regards Peter

Touch and visually check the wiring insulation where the wires enter the top of the crankshalf position sensor. The sensor is located low down on the forward face of the block underneath the front engine mounting, and it will be covered by road muck. My 1996 AGG insulation disintegrated at 130k miles.
|
In the dark, do a water mist spray test on the ignition coil, the coil insulation covering can crack with age. For safety reasons, don't spray the coil with the engine running. Another test is to spray the top of the crankshalf position sensor, but only do one of these tests at a time.

Thanks
Worse still I cant find my manual. I have checked all the hoses they are all good although there was a lot of very thick oil stuck in the vacume hose that comes from the top of the rocker cover. I will attempt to find this sensor.

Be careful handing the black plastic engine breather pipe that runs from the cam cover to the block, it disintegrates with age and is not as cheap as it looks. However it is easy to remove and wash out with water.
To help you find the crankshaft sensor, follow the small dia. black cable (with 3 insulated wires inside) down beside the dipstick tube and underneath the front engine mounting, the sensor is on the block and very close to the block/gearbox mating face.

Relay and ignition switch is quite likely. Also fuel pump relay. Pull them out and check there is no burning on the contact base. X relay though will kill most other electrics. Fuel pump relay gets hot and plays up.

Not sure if its the same with a 2.0, but my VR6 has similar issues.
Clicking on RHS of dash - this was recent and was down to a failing battery (car wouldn't start, accompanied by clicking noise from dash)
Poor running / stalling - this was down to the 'multi plug' which connectes to the MAF sensor on the air intake. It looked fine, but on closer inspection the wires were corroded where they enter the plug, causing poor running/smoke/stalling. I managed to repair mine, but it was very fiddly.

All done and cleaned. Took it to my works transport section and they said ECU!. Managed to drive it there no problem but cut out on way home. I have checked the ECU but dont know what I am looking for, also X relay is numbered No 18!! would this be correct. Trying to save money however VAG looks on the horizon.

Bushy, when it cuts out does it restart straight away or not. If not you need to find out if its producing a spark or not, or if its a lack a fuel. Personally I,d go for the ignition coil fitted on the bulk head. As it get hot it fails to work, and does not produce the power to cause a spark. Then as it cools down after a while you can start the engine again. Go to www.talktomycar.co.uk and buy a diagnostic reader approx £25. email me and I,ll phone you with another way of testing for a spark.

Thanks
It is so sporadic and seems to be getting worse. It will just cut out and I have to coast and find a place to dump it it, then it will suddenly burst in to life again. I drove to Bridgnorth and back to Worcester the other day no problems then this morning did it again and cut out on me. Difficult to start, tries then dies so to speak.
Thank you

My brother had a Golf Mk III 2.0 GTi. It had symptoms exactly like yours. But it was a K plate (93?) and one of the earlier ones. Water would get into the electrics from the road spray and it would stop. Or that is what it seemend to be. Later cars he was told had a metal plate under the engine to reduce the amount of water getting in.
Did it get fixed? No.
Did it go wrong a lot? Yes - often on the motorway at 70mph!
What happened? He moved to California before the end of lease - same employer though.

The give away is the relays clicking behind the dash, faulty coils and the like does noit cause this. The crank position sensor can cause the fuel pump relay to chick but the X power relay cause several other relays to click. Regards Peter

I am pleased to see (under 2L rotor arm replacement heading) that you have found the fault. Thank you for letting us know. Happy motoring.

i had a golf gti come in with the same problem and found that the wires to the crank shaft senser located behind the front engine mounting although looked ok ,on further inspection the outer casing crumbled in my fingers and found the three inner wires were the same thus explaining why it cut out only now and again

I had the similar problems with mine.
After changing the Bosch Coil, High Tension Leads and the ignition, etc, etc I decided to try the internet.
Thanks very much guys.
The problem is now solved. I changed the Rotor and boom the problem is solved. Thanks a mil
