Took SWMBOs Yaris for an MOT today. It failed due to front and rear number plates "missing BS AU145d marking". These were the same plates that passed last year at the same place. It seems, from the well thumbed piece of paper shown to me by the chap on reception, that there has been a change in the law requiring this. The supplier's name and phone number is clearly marked however. As it happens it is going back tomorrow for a drop link to be replaced so only £25 wasted for the new plates. This seems absolutely ridiculous to me and a classic example of trivial legislation but checking on www.motuk.co.uk/manual_630.htm this would appear to be the case. No doubt all the crooks who fake number plates will make sure they put the BS mark on them in future. BS, seems appropriate somehow!

Interesting. I changed the plates on the Scenic for "GB" / EU items back in September in preparation for a European road trip. These are non BSAU marked plates (from Ebay).

I had the car MOT'd in November, and it wasn't mentioned.

My car passed the MOT in May with a large crack in the reg plate, I have chnaged it since anyway, cost me £10 at my local factors and it has all the proper markings. Rather tham moan I would be pleased they picked it up, if they have noticed something trivial like that they may also be more likely to notice an arm which could snap at any minute.

Ask your MOT tester for date of the change.

see previous discussion here:
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=57649&...f

But my last post there referred to a press release of Sept.07
www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/Special%20Noti...f
but missed this one of Nov.07
www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/Special%20Noti...f
which "revoked" some of the "reasons for refusal".

One of the revoked rules is :
A registration plate obviously not displaying a BSAU 145d marking

Question is, have these revoked rules been reinstated at some time since November 2007?

Otherwise your car has been wrongly failed.

JBIF, many thanks indeed for the links to previous threads and external sources of data which I have now followed up. It looks as if these details were excluded from MOT tests from around Nov 07 to March 08, not entirely sure about the dates here, due to technicalities relating to the enactment of the legislation. The RMIF site stated that it was always the intention that this would be corrected, and hence the Yaris would have passed last time, Dec 07, but not this time unfortunately. Rattle, I was not moaning or intending to moan but merely highlighting what I think is a trivial piece of legislation made all the more so by its retrospective nature. As it happens I have to go back tomorrow anyway and I am pleased that the drop link fault was picked up and am more than happy to have it quickly and courteously fixed by a reliable outfit. This is my wife's car, and indeed for her's and mine, I do not pennypinch on such things. Tyres are always replaced well before they are down to the limit and I have both cars serviced by our local independent so that they are properly checked over and things that an oil/filter/brake pads kind of chap like me wont necessarily spot are picked up.

So in response to JBIF's final point, I rather think the rules have been regularised and all for the sake of a kitemark or whatever I have to have the plates replaced. Trivial nonsense.

As a tester for the last 22 yrs I wondered where the number plates came into a test which was to ensure vehicle safety and later, emissions.
Silly me ....of course you have to be visible to the cameras otherwise the revenue will not roll in as quickly !

These links in the old thread to VOSA pdf documents are dead:

So it is no longer possible to check when, if ever, VOSA reinstated the checks which were suspended from November 2007.

If yorkiebar or other person in the know has the information on the date of reinstatement of those checks, it would be helpful to know.
