I have been driving since 2002. For the past 4 years I have had a company car, and obviously incurred no 'no claims' bonus.
I?m about to purchase my own car and have been looking on the Insurance comparison sites. About 2 weeks ago I was getting quotes for around £400 fully comp. I?ve just been back on and now the quotes are around £650.
One of the comparison sites (I can?t think which one) had an option to tick what previous driving history you had - i.e. private or company car use.
I?ve searched through the main ones - Compare the market, Go Compare, Confused.com and Money Supermarket.com and none of these have this option.
I swear i used one of these sites and it had the option. Can anyone advise if they know a site which does this or why this option has been removed?

It's a long time ago but when I stopped having company cars I asked my ex-employer for a "for whom it may concern" letter confirming that I had been insured under their policy.

It stated in my case that I had no accident history and quoted the policy number and company which had provided the cover and the number of years I had been covered by it.

I took that letter to a high street broker when I wanted to insure my own car and they were happy to treat it as proof of no claims for that period. Saved me a tidy sum.

Not sure if such a thing would work now but might be worth a try.

I had the same problem about a year ago and ended up with Direct Line. With written confirmation from the Fleet Co of no claims they gave me a full NCB. I think they would have also have given me credit for having been a named driver on my wife's policy too.
Worth a try as I dont think they appear on the comparison sites.

Good Luck

I think the correct term for the document you need from the company insurer is a "letter of credence". It will state driving history etc. This then can get you the equivalent of no claims.

Speak to your fleet department and they will tell you who to contact. When I nearly went down this route it was the underwriters of our insurance - we self insure due to the size of fleet.

Would they accept a letter on letter headed paper from the company? Il give Directline and a few others a call tomorrow and see what the score is.

I always thought they would accept a letter from the insurer used by the insurer... I can print letters myself on letter headed paper.... as I said earlier you will need a letter of credence.

I would hope you can get quotes over the phones but the accepted document that backs your motoring record is needed.

I had no problems getting full no claims from Liverpool Victoria with a letter from my previous company's insurance broker.

I think, though, that LV will give a 50% introductory discount to anyone who declares a clean record (their full NCD is something like 72.5%). I've found that their quotes vary though - for me (and my brother) they were very good, but others I've referred have found them very expensive.
