Recommend a Fiesta/Focus Sized Car - MartinJB1
I need a car for mainly town use, but it must have the following characteristics:

As comfortable as a Volvo
Automatic
Fiesta-Focus size
Well built and reliable

I'm not too constrained by budget, don't care for diesel as low mileage, and will buy second-hand.

Anyone got any ideas?

My Dilemma - billy25
Fiesta-Focus sized Volvo?
Lexus 200 (maybe slightly larger)
My Dilemma - commerdriver
1 series BMW?

But is it comfortable, I have heard they can be very cramped inside.

What about a Volvo? The current S40 shares the chassis with the current Focus I believe.

HJ liked the Toyota Auris 180 diesel: quick, economical and comfortable over speed bumps and so on. It's a high-spec Auris, a hot hatch for those past their first youth. I fancy one.

And re rtj's Volvo suggestion, there's a tasty auto one in the classifieds.

The Mazda 3 might be worth a look. There's a new one out early next year, though.

You want a small car with the highest profile tyres to provide a smooth ride. Cars which are comfortable are frequently easy to access and have good driving positions.

Although I love my Subaru Outback, in terms of ease of access, excellent ride and fantastic driving position, the best car I have found for that is the Subaru Forester. Get the non-turbo model and you get high profile tyres and car no bigger than a Focus.

There are also some of the Japanese small cars which have high bodies so easy to access, but the interiors are not so great.

Mercedes A Class with adjustable lumbar support would also be good.

Too big

A colleague of mine was raving about the Golf Mk6 he test drove. Reckoned it was considerably quieter and more comfortable than his E90 3 Series. And considerably cheaper as well of course.

er, haven't you answered your own question Martin?

Why not go for a Fiesta or Focus?

You say you want an automatic, but what sort? Does it have to be a traditional torque-convertor type, or would you accept a DSG-type dual clutch job, or even an automated manual like Citroen offer? What about an Audi with a CVT?

Sorry, I know this sounds niggly. However, several manufacturers appear to be dropping torque-convertor automatics in this size range, often in favour of the automated manuals. Those boxes get mixed reviews.

Don't care, comfortable seating is #1 priority

Try a Fiat Bravo if seats are that important. They are seriously supportive and comfortable. Very good car too, bargains to be had nearly new. My oldish Fiat Stilo's seats are waaaaaay more supportive than those in my wife's brand new VW Touran. Mega comfy.

Scratch the Bravo. No auto available. :-(

I drive my wife's C-Max automatic. It's OK but not that comfortable

Try the Forester for size. I bet it is no bigger than the C-Max.

What about a Volvo C30 ?

Focus sized, has a Volvo badge so should be as comfortable as one, autos available and should be able to get a decent discount as they aren't exactly flying out of the showrooms.

Dodge Caliber? Vauxhall Astra? Chevrolet Lacetti?

I heard Saabs had the best seats and if you do small mileage why not get something a little bigger?

Seat comfort is a very personal thing - you need to go rouns a few dealers and sit in some different cars. If you like soft and squishy, go for something French. My own priority is decent lumbar support, and lack of aches after a long run.

My current Golf V estate does this job (and all others, come to that) admirably.

Deeply impressed by VAG group seats. (The touran and the Altea ) - Firmer than French offerings, but having used them for the last 3 years, 60k miles, and drives up to 8 hours in length, each time I step from them with not an ache or twinge.

I am similarly impressed by the seats on my Nissan Almera. The suspension gives far too hard a ride around town, but the front seats are great for long journeys. I recently did 470 miles in one day, and came out with no aches or discomfort.

Thanks for all your postings. I have finally settled for a Volvo S60 auto. Probably bigger than I need but the seats are the best I have ever sat in and an electric driver's seat was the clincher.
