96 1.8 Diesel will not turn off - Saltrampen
Friend's high mileage 95-96 Mondeo Diesel now will not switch off, unless stalled in 5th gear.
Suggested Cause : Solenoid buried in fuel pump gone...
Part cost is less than £30, but labour quoted around £600 at indep. garage...

Does anyone know how big a job (hours) this is? Is it cheaper/quicker to get a whole fule pump assembly from the scrapyard or recon outlet and replace the whole thing?

thanks in advance...

It's the security plate around the immobilizer module on the pump that's the problem.

As its bolts are hidden on the inside of the pump, to access them requires pump removal - and that requires cam and pump-belt renewal - so you see why you got a "forget it" price quoted.

Now if you were to take the rad out and get an artist with an angle grinder to have a go.....

I wonder if cutting into fuel line and putting in another soleniod wired to dash before the pump would work, or would it just strain and wear the pump seals?
But sounds like it is financially terminal...

It might work; but whether the suction pump would object...?

An external solonoid valve would probably work but you run the risk of it sucking air in somewhere making it difficult to start again. I would get used to stalling it, I did it for years on cars fitted with Perkins 4/108 engines.

Saltrampen, have you checked the wiring ?
The solenoid may be getting a shorted feed from somewhere, try disconnecting it whilst it's running.

Thanks for comments have passed them on.
I don't suppose it has helped that he has been using a 75:25 Diesel / veg oil blend sometimes - even if it is an old style diesel engine.

Maybe the veg oil blend was false economy and has done the damage but who knows? If it was me then I would be inclined to take Screwloose's advice and give it a go at cutting the security plate away. Other than that he could keep stalling it, but eventually it may knacker the clutch up. Has he tried pricing the job up at a diesel pump specialist?

Lucas/Roto pumps are notorious for hating junk fuel. Maybe some near-neat system cleaner sucked-in and left overnight might help?
