96 1.1 injection - problem losing power - Kery
I'd really appreciate some advice on an ongoing problem I've been having with my car, as the mechanics I usually take it to can't seem to work it out.

About a year after I got the car it started to lose power at speeds of about 70. The garage said there was probably a coil that needed replacing but it wasn't urgent or dangerous. As they were far away and the problem was intermittent I let it be, as reapplying my foot on the accelerator seemed to do the trick.

The problem came back a year or two later - again at high speeds and also when there was a lot of weight in the car. Since then it has deteriorated, setting in at lower and lower speeds. Recently it has started to kick in around five minutes after I've started the journey. Reapplying my foot on the accelerator is not working now, and when the engine is idling the car shudders slightly. The other day it turned itself off entirely when I was cruising very slowly looking for parking.

When I took it to the mechanics they said the coil was fine but that they had cleared out a tube which was blocked. This hasn't made any difference though. They don't seem to have any suggestions as to what else it might be. The engine light has been coming on most of the times when the problem occurs but the diagnostic is not returning any information.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what it might be they'd be much appreciated.

The first thing that comes to mind is a blocked fuel filter - has that been changed?

If the light has been on; then there will be codes - if their machine can't read them, then they need better equipment.

...if that doesn't work, try unscrewing the fuel filler cap when it happens, the vent maybe blocked.

I wonder if anybody can give me some hints.

Reliable old AX11 that always starts well and runs well. Has been a cheap car to run and not much has gone wrong.

Recently when braking sharply the N/S front wheel seems to lock up but the car does not pull to N/S when applying the brakes. Brakes work Ok it is just that they now lock up a wheel when they did not do this before. There is no ABS on this old car.

Checked the pads on both sides, (still about 25% remaining) and everything seems to be working smoothly, (no sticky clippers that I can see).

Rear brakes are also working OK.

I did bleed the brakes and the pedal feel improved but the N/S wheel lock up still persists.

I do have a new set of pads and will fit them if this will cure the problem but the existing pads still have some reasonable life left?

What could be the problem? Any thoughts from the experts out there?

Thanks for your help.

If the braking force is equal [try it on an MOT brake tester] then you have a tyre grip problem.

Checked the tyre pressures? N/S too high?

No access to an MOT brake tester, (passed OK in June this year) but I will check the pressures.

Pressure should be OK but N/S tyre is newish and cheap, (China make). Maybe it is just a pressure/grip issue. I will report back after the weekend.

Anybody else got any other thoughts?

Kery, has it got its original air box & ducting fitted on it? a lot of racers put a foam filter on these for the sound effects but the throttle body housing frezzes at speed on a motor way causing loss of power. Once stopped the heat usually de-ices the throttle body & off you go.
Worth haviing the valve clearances checked incase they are tight!. If it cuts out completely frequently they have whats called a "telecametric relay" multifunction relay near ECU, red or black which are prone to failing.
