Hi- 93 ford fiesta starter motor suddenly stopped working and only now get the clunk of the solenoid but no engagement to turn the engine over - checked for tight wiring connections and a good charged battery but still happening so suspect the starter motor - but might be something else. Have not taken it out yet but wanted to know if there were any servicable parts or is it best to replace rather than try and repair. Car starts fine on a bump start.
Many thanks

Apart from the solenoid clunking does the starter make any other noise?
The pinion end of the starter motor does tend to get dirty from clutch dust etc. This may be stopping the pinion working smoothly. That assembly may be worth cleaning.
The brushes may be worn out or their springs broken or the commutator may be damaged.
You may be able to get new brushes and fit them, but other than that you will probably find that parts are more expensive than a second hand unit from a scrapyard.

I would concur. Have a look on ebay, you will probably find a replacement starter for not a lot of money.

Get an exchange unit;a second hand one from a breaker or off E-Bay is likely to be not much better than the one you've got.

Is the starter motor spinning, but not engaging? I am not sure if the starter motor is the same as that used in the later 1.25 16v engine but see my previous thread. If spinning, then try warming it up with a hair drier to get you out of trouble. You may find that one heat treatment lasts you for several days or weeks. Just be careful where you park, look for a slope where you will not be blocked in.
A second hand one cost me £5 about 3 years ago and came from a 60k motor and is still ok.. Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies - interestingly after a couple of days making sure I park facing downwards on a hill the starter motor started working but I cannot rely on it so with your advice I will forget a repair and will fit a new starter motor as soon as I can.
Thanks
