The ( original) radio works as normal with no lights on and always has done.
It has developed an intermitent fault.
Ignition switch to AUX and the radio works to spec.
When the lights are switched on, all the FM channels and the AM are very very distorted.
This is prior to turning the ignition switch beyond AUX.
The fault remains for some days so it survives turning the engine on and off / removing the ignition key.
The fault occured some weeks ago and then corrected itself. It has now returned.
There has been no messing with any of the electrics to provoke the fault and I have unscrewed and rescrewed the roof aerial ( that was replaced with a pukka Toyota one about three years ago) .
Haynes was not published when the car was bought (Toyotas do not go wrong?) so I have not looked at a wiring diagram but I am more than a little baffled at where to start.
My instinct says maybe the column mounted light switch but waggling it has not cured the problem.

When you say fm channels & am distorted, is the fault there on tape/cd aswell? sounds like a fault on the earthing side of the light circuit, what could try, remove the tape deck, test for the light feed at the multi plug, disconnect it and see what happens.
