Ford 1.6tdci vs 1.8tdci - audiA6tdi
Looking at a Focus for my wife, after a pre reg or 57 plate. Can anyone advise on the difference between the 1.6 and 1.8. The bhp is quite similar. Ive driven the 1.8 and found it a bit rough. Apparenty the 1.6 is the PSA unit which if its the same one then a friend has one in his Peugeot 308 and it seems very refined.
Also ive noticed that the 1.6 tdci's are generally more expensive. A lot of the car supermarket websites dont have the 1.6. I guess they are all ex rentals. Is the 1.8 an old engine ready to be replaced?
thanks

It's not a PSA unit;it's a Ford/PSA unit;a joint design and built by Ford at Dagenham.

Hello audiA6tdi,

You are right. The 1.6 ( and 2.0) TDCis are the joint Ford/PSA engines, which are unrelated to the older 1.8TDCi. The Ford/PSA ones are much smoother, with I believe the 1.6 110BHP variant being the sweetest.

My wife has a 1.6 tdci focus and I a 1.8tdci.
Last week I did 1000 miles in the 1.8. I don't think the 1.6 would have had the grunt for the hills of the Yorkshire Dales or the motorway. No competition. The 1.8 is better by far. If you want economy in and around town, go for the 1.6.

I've wasn't overly impressed with the 1.8TDCi personally when we tried it in an S-Max earlier this year. Although I couldn't fault the outright performance (in the context of the car), and the refinement was OK, it had an almost intolerable throttle lag, particularly in the first inch or two of travel. It reminded me of an old Rover 218D turbo that we had on our fleet a while back, in which you almost had to treat the accelerator as an on/off device.

When we got back in the Scenic (which is 5PS down) I actually spun the wheels off the forecourt, and over-revved it for the first few pull-aways. The difference was quite remarkable. Although no quicker outright, if I'd used the same throttle inputs to pull away and accelerate, I'd have done a clutch and a pair of front tyres on the journey home!

I've driven the 1.6 110 in a Citroen C4 and thought it was a peach of an engine. So sweet and refined. The bigger 2.0 unit is also a very impressive engine.

What Ford have done with that 1.8 is remarkable considering the basic mechanicals date back to the old 88 bhp Endura-DE engine from the early 90's Mondeo and Escort, but it's not a patch on the newer PSA co-developed units IMO.

Cheers

I noticed that on the 1.8tdci. Put your foot down when pulling out of a junction and nothing would happen for a couple of seconds then BANG the car shoots forward.
I did drive a 1.6tdci a long time ago but it was only on a short journey but i remember how smooth the car was.

I have a 1.8, but have driven a 110 1.6 . 1.6 is very quiet and super smooth. However 1.8 has a lot of pull and in my opinion is fun one to drive.

Not sure what the 1.6 90hp is like and if its still avaiable on 2007-8 models.
