on switching the ignition after a few seconds there is a sound from the fuel injection distributor as if a pin moves or drops ive never heard this before. also the car wont start after replacing all ignition items checked fuel pumps changed fuel filter all ok there

Have you got a good spark at the right time. Does the cold-start injector spray fuel when cranking?

When and how did the problem arise?

car was running fine went to start it wouldnt start got it towed home then tried it again started ok then after that has just refused to start ive changed dizy cap/ coil/ rotor arm/ coil/ leads/ plugs but still nothing just backfires when cranking over

Any chance that the leads could have got mixed up? Or has more damp got into the new cap? [I know it's summer; but...]

Have you checked the timing with a strobe light?
1989 2.6 non starter - hc1uk
ive checked leads the firing order corresponds with with numbers on the dizzy cap so no mix up there have had the cap off many times seems fine. im not a mechanic but it seems to me that its not getting fuel to the injectors but its pumping fuel to the fuel distributer ok with just over 5 bar pressure

Wouldn't matter if the injectors weren't working; it would still fire-up on the cold start injector.

Backfiring is firing out of order or with valves still open. Check that #1 cylinder is getting a spark at the right time.

>>then tried it again started ok

Were there any other lights on the dashboard while it was running? (ABS?)

is it possible that the ignition timing has somehow gone off im running out of ideas and just throwing new parts at it ie

new fuel pumps
dizzy cap
rotor arm
coil
ignition leads
plugs

after all that still wont fire

You need to start testing to build some solid facts to get a grip on the problem.

So:-

Is number 1 cylinder getting a spark at the right time?

Is the cold start injector injecting burnable fuel when cranking?
1989 2.6 non starter - hc1uk
can the timing be checked even though its not running ie with a timing light
1989 2.6 non starter - Screwloose

Yes; a strobe light will still work fine when it's just cranking.

cold start valve getting fuel ok. if its a timing issue could it have gone out of timing somehow all ignition parts have been replaced and rechecked

Spray easy start in the air intake. If it runs you know it's a fuel problem. If it doesn't then it's either a lack of compression or an ignition/timing fault.

Easy start in a petrol will do no harm at all, but don't use the whole can obviously......

Remove the dizzy cap & make sure the rotor arm is pointing to the correct location for the cyl that is firing and also that it is rotating in time with camshaft rotation. These engines can shear the drive coupling from the cam to the rotor arm and put the ignition timing out.hth

took off dizzy cap and rotor everthing seems fine there backplate of the rotor is locating ok and rotor is turning ok and seems to be in the right position

cold start valve getting fuel ok.

Getting fuel wasn't the question; is it injecting it too?
1989 2.6 non starter - hc1uk
no fuel through the cold start valve
1989 2.6 non starter - Screwloose

Try a squirt of something inflammable; WD40, brake cleaner etc. through the cold-start valve's hole [or anywhere else] and see if it fires on that?

tried to start on a squirt of easystart cranked it over for about a minute before hand pulled 2 plugs out both were dry fuel pumps were are working ok
