my ISP is AOL.
AOL ISP was taken over by Carphone in 2006, and they will soon be migrating everyone over to their own ISP or give them the boot if they cannot do so.
www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/31/carphone_trading_.../
""We have successfully migrated over 1.3m AOL customers: a further 80,000 customers, whose operating systems or hardware are incompatible with the new platform, are yet to be migrated and a proportion of these are likely to be at risk."
They say a cable modem will not work with Vista
A link would help to see exactly what they say. A cable modem is normally a modem that cable broadband customers [in the UK that normally means Virgin Media] would use.
They then go onto say that Vista will not work with the BT 105
Again a link to that claim would have helped. Anyway not to worry.
I should upgrade to an ethernet based modem or a modem router.
Good advice. To learn more and see reviews, see here:

What is an ethernet based modem or for that matter what is a modem router (wifi)?

Carphone Warehouse did originally state, on taking over AOL, that the ISP would be allowed to maintain its autonomy.
To be honest, although I'm a TalkTalk customer of more than two years, I wouldn't even entertain the thought of using AOL..:-)

Or Vista - sounds like a recipe for disaster.

An Ethernet based modem router (about the same price as a USB modem) will deliver much better and more stable performance.
I paid £23 including delivery for mine (an e-Buyer own brand, but rebadged Safecom) wired modem router about two years ago. It dropped to £15 in price soon afterwards...:-(
It has proved utterly reliable even though it's permanently switched on.
Netgear models appear to be very similar in appearance, but are much more expensive.
One e-Buyer offering at this price point is:
