IIRC the Ford Engine is actually a Mazda

Mazda Xedos 6&9 had ignition problems
HJs car by car breakdown says

Can suffer from ignition problems. Repair kit from Ford dealers is £164 (inc VAT) for the V6. No longer necessary to buy a new/reconditioned distributor.

You've got the wrong engine. This is the ford duratec 24V engine, not the probe engine.

Although it's not the same engine as the Probe; it does have Mazda roots.

The main difference is the unreliable distributor has gone and it's got a coilpack. If it's had plugs and genuine leads; that coilpack's 6 output voltages would be my first test, after checking codes and data.
