dear john,
can you tell me when the escrot changed "marks" and when it was just upgraded or facelifted. am pretty sure about the first two marks but fuzzy when the mark iv and v started (well i have my ideas but fear i maybe wrong!!).
also, who decides when one mark begins and ends, is it the manufacturer?

IIRC
The last Mk IV's (run out models) were on H plates (Upto September 1990).
Mk V's were H plate onwards - new bodywork, old engines strangled by catalysts.
As HJ states in his car by car breakdown - avoid anything pre-1995.

Escort Marks are unofficial, so it depends on whether the unofficial marker rates a facelift as a facelift or as a new mark. I only count egg shape rear drive Mk 1; square shape rear drive Mk II; front drive from circa 1980 to 1990 Mk III; roundy front drive from circa 1990 until they stopped making them Mk IV. If you count facelifts there would be seven Marks.

Don't forget that the very last Escorts made were built to Jaguar's quality standards at halewood....
