hi bought a rover 416si T reg drove home fine but when i left it running on drive it overheated. any ideas

Sounds as though the radiator fan is not working, could be the sensor or a bad connection somewhere.

Buy it from a trader or private?
If trader have a word with them?
Have you taken it for a drive since? Does it run ok when driving still or overheat quick?
If overheating still, then dont drive it ANY more until the problem is sorted.

if the temp guage reads normal why are you saying the engine is overheating?

Does sound like the cooling fan ain't working for some reason. Is there enough coolant in the resevoir? The 416Si gets the 1.6 Honda 16v engine so you shouldn't be getting any head gasket problems like the K series Rover engines
Hope this helps a bit

if it stayed within heat range whilst on the move you could rule out water pump, thermostat....have you tried bridging the multi-plug on the cooling fan connector to see if its working?
