Hello
Driving back from work a bmw cop car was parked about 50 yards from a roundabout facing the way i was going - it was on the central reservation of the dual carriageway facing the direction I was travelling in ...............as I approached it at about 35mph ((donwhill )) ((speed limit 30mph))) I noted the red lights flashing - I slowed down & as i passed the polce car te lights were turned off.....it was just the red roof lights.
My question - do some own bmw estat cars have a rear facing speed camera?
Thanks

Yes - all of them do !!!!!!!!
Only joking - I doubt it - if he was using a speed camera I doubt he would have his lights on - this is the UK remember and as a criminal - sorry motorist - they will try a bit harder than that to catch you out.
I would relax and forget it.

But only after say an estimated 28 days as this is how long it usually takes for the penalty notice to arrive...
...I doubt if a traffic car is going to sit there, all rigged up to detect speeders just to 'flash' his array of lights as you sale on by...
...if he was going to talk to you, do you not think a verbal discussion as opposed to 'oh let me show you my pretty lights' etc., and leave that open to you to work out what he means would be more appropriate?
Same as motorists that flash you as they pass and expect to work out what they are thinking!
Whilst on the subject of that - if you flash an oncoming vehicle and you are trying to convey a message, a 'thumbs down' hand signal (trucker speak) means you are heading for trouble - usually a speed camera etc.

Which is 14 days more than it needs to be invalidated by late service.

Hello
Thanks all.
I also thought at the time that the coper would have followed me & got me to stop & tLK AT ME, OR not bother with the lights.
As always, you've been v helpful
I read but rarely post.

We all know [sic] they usually arrive within 7 to 10 days of you having commited the penalty don't we?

He probably was trapping and the lights were a polite warning that the OP was very close to getting a ticket. Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago on the A33 but I don't recall what type of vehicle it was.

Kevin's right.
That's quite a common signal in some parts - I've seen it on more than one occasion....
Take it as a wagged finger: "We saw that; but we'll let you off - this once; don't let us catch you doing that again...."

it is almost certainly ANPR

Isn't that illegal?

no,
someone did get prosecuted for Attempting to Pervert the Course of Justice by warning other motorists that there was a speed trap ahead (and thereby interfering with the law enforcement)...but
his defence was he was only warning people of a potential traffic hazard ahead, as after all the police wouldn't be doing speed detection there if it wasn't a place where there'd been accidents or was perceieved to be a hazardous part of the road
he was found Not Guilty
only Magistrates Court, so not a 'stated case' as such, but if you're planning on doing that sort of thing, i'd bear it in mind.

Are you sure you've got the right offence? That's indictable-only. Might it have been "Obstruct PC" instead?

quite possibly so

In the early days of the AA, they received a letter from one of their patrols who was incarcerated in Wandsworth Gaol for just that offence.
If they'd lost the subsequent court case [at the Bailey IIRC] then the AA would have disappeared permanently.
