...car around £5k? My Mum has written off her Mondeo, and whilst everything is fine, she's looking at much smaller cars these days than when she bought the TDCi, my Dad having now got a much larger cruiser for their Spainish trips. In a never-ending quest for fuel consumption and cheap tax, she's been considering the following:
107 1.0 Urban (with a/c), Clio Dci 80 Dynamique (old shape, again with a/c), Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 90 (6spd) Dynamic, Ford Fiesta Zetec-S TDCi and Citroen C3 HDi SX.
I know its a varied list, and they all have their pro's and con's, but does anyone have experience of these in respect of higher-mileages? Are any particularly unrefined or uncomfortable on the motorway? Or any a bit problematic on brisk country roads? And do they really return the kind of figures they report - I know this depends on driving, but the Mondeo always lived up to its 48mpg with mixed driving? She's only small so driving positions are unlikely to bug her, but she does want good visibility and something very easy to park!

C1/C2/Aygo diesel - 107 is not as good as its petrol only...
If you can get one a LHD Smart diesel is probably the most economical...
The old Lupo 1.7SDi was an economical little begger as well....

Diesel Aygo/C1 offers little more than the petrol - less than the premium of buying diesel fuel over petrol. Petrol Aygo will do well over 60 mpg on a run.
400 miles between fill ups is normal - the tank is only 7 gallons. Ours does 45mpg round town.
Motorway trips are tolerable in that it will do motorway speeds without a problem, but it does get buffeted in higher winds and you have to plan overtakes a bit more, especially on inclines. Drive it at 60-65mph though and it copes admirably.
The engine in the Aygo is the same as the Yaris and many of these have done over 100,000 miles without a problem.

for me id get a panda diesel for about 6300 from www.perrys.co.uk/fiat or
www.fiatsupasaver.com/default.aspx
otherwise the panda active (petrol) is only 5200
panda dynamic petrol is about 5500
but for me id stump the extra money for the panda diesel
so much more room than a C1 etc, and really quite good on the motorway etc
we love our panda, really cannot see why people pay the same money for a C1
|
oh yea and panda diesel is only 35 quid tax disc per year
|
So's the C1/2....
Thats why I suggested the C2 - going back to mpg, many commnets I've seen from people who have the C1/Aygo diesel seem to have no probs getting around 80, yet the most the petrol seems to do is around 60 - only what people say they've got, mind you... it rather depends on how its driven!
As the previous poster said, it depends on the "premium" - for £300 I'd get the diesel as well, though I'm not a fan of the Panda's looks unlike some...

Reading in the 'Which' car review mag, very few cars actually seem to get their 'official' figures for mpg. Many of them are 7 or 8 miles short of the quoted mpg figure, so I wouldn't let these figures sway you too much. Better to find a car she really likes to drive. The Mitsubishi Colt is a nice car and should be reliable, though not £35 tax band.

We've just been talking and she's concerned about Citroen reliability with the HDI engine. She had a 405 TD that was amazing, and she loved, but also a 306 HDI which was a dog. PSA group cars rarely top satisfaction surveys and it was the Toyota engine that she was putting faith in with the C1/107/Aygo.
How reliable are people's experiences of the Punto? She really likes the look of it, and drove a 75bhp one as a courtesy car recently, but felt it a bit laggy, hence why she'd like a 90bhp one...
