"Magistrate Peter Mellor gave her four penalty points, which meant she was disqualified under totting up as she already had nine points for three previous speeding convictions.
"I am sorry she won't have a very pleasant memory of her first visit to Portsmouth," said Mr Mellor.

Six months' ban seems pretty steep though.

She "had not seen the camera", she "was disorientated by the road system", and she "failed to spot that she was in a restricted speed area", and had previous convictions (all for speeding) in September 2005, March 2006 and June 2007.
Well! 6 months off seems quite a sound plan. Perhaps she'll be more careful in future!

I can just see her school reports :)
'Daydreamer' etc., and I think I can hear her teacher too...
Robinson sit up and pay attention at the back there!
You are the weakest link - goodbye!

The magistrate, Mr. Mellor, seems to have rather a dry sense of humour - apart from his remark that "I am sorry she won't have a very pleasant memory of her first visit to Portsmouth", he also "handed Mr McGoldrick (defending) a leaflet explaining the disqualification to be forwarded to Robinson" - Mr. Mellor said "This is so there is no reason for her to be confused."

With the amount of money she earnes, she can afford to hire a chauffeur!

It took a few seconds to realise/work out the implications of the significance of this thread...:-)
|
Perhaps Anne was thinking more about the £20m she has to pay her former husband following their divorce settlement than her driving?
That would really hurt any woman...:-))

funny you should mention ann robinson, she got banned from driving too for 6 months for her fourth speeding offence

To quote the BBC article..
"Robinson had been caught by a speed camera as she drove her Audi A3 car out of the city after disembarking a ferry from the Isle of Wight.
Michael McGoldrick, mitigating, said Robinson had not seen the camera as she was disorientated by the road system on her first ever visit there."
Assuming she was in her own car, and it REALLY WAS her first ever visit to Portsmouth, how on earth did she get to the IoW in the first place? Or is there more than one ferry service to that hugely populated island?

Well I sailed from Southampton last time I went

There's another case reported in today's Telegraph, an appeal by some animal rights toerag whose self-righteous espousal of our furry cousins' cause led him to commit various heinous offences. The appeal is based on the fact that the judge who sentenced him shoots a few pheasants as a hobby.
This makes no sense to a rational person of course, but the hope must be that those opposed to blood sports will see this as evidence of bias. Of course judges are paid to be biased in cases involving things like arson, criminal damage and threatening behaviour, but the hope must be that people will be too half-witted to understand that (or indeed approve of it).
(Sorry. I have posted this here by mistake. It ought to be in the political correctness thread).

We used the Lymington ferry service to Yarmouth in West Wight as we were staying in the New Forest at the time; you can also sail from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Ryde Pier Head according to this ferry services link:

I know this camera well.
It is a 30 limit dual carriage way on the way out of town leading to the motorway.
The position of it is on the sign posted road 'out of city' which visitors to Gunwharf Quays are almost certain to pass on their way home.
I understand the need for the camera where it is , not sure the last impression of a re-generated Portsmouth should be a bill in the post though. From memory , the 30 limit is not well sign posted and as far as I can remember , no speed camera warning either.
Not trying to defend anyone , just a passing comment!

is the camera hidden or one of the usual glaringly obvious big things up a pole with a load of white lines on the carriageway?
