my 1989 190e 2.6 auto refuses to start its trying to fire but coughs and splutters ive replaced distributor cap/ rotor arm/ plug leads but still same problem any help would br gratefull

You say that the rotor arm has been replaced, but did you check to see if it rotating correctly. It is not unusual for the drive dog for the rotor arm to break away from the front of the camshaft. If this is all in order and there is a strong spark at the plugs ,then I would suspect a fuel problem. The Bosch Ke-jetronic injection system fitted to this car needs a good fuel delivery/pressure to enable the car to start.Find somebody with the correct test equipment that is able to verify the correct running pressure.hth
