2006 1.6 Air con does not work - Speedysteve

My fathers 2006 Focus II 1.6 Duratec engine, air con stopped working yesterday.
He had run the air con regularly at least once a week winter and summer following HJ's instructions about duration of running and cold first then hot to dry things out.
Yesterday (hottest day of the year I guess) it did not work. The indicator light comes on on the button but no cooling effect. He can't tell if the engine is made to work harder or not by pressing the switch.
The belt to the compressor is on and spinning.

Could it be a simple fuse or has a seal let the gas the gas out?

Any help much appreciated.

You could see if the cabin filter needs renewing, it may be black after 2 years. However, a dirty filter would only reduce efficiency of the aircon not completely disable it.

Try (with the engine running and bonnet up) get someone to switch on the aircon and look and listten that the clutch on the aircon compressor (in between the pulley and compressor body) engages with a 'clack'. This will elliminate an electrical problem. Then if this is okay it is almost certainly a loss of refridgerant.

is the fan running, has the recirculation switch been pressed. my a/c doesn't work if it's in recirculate mode.

I have a Pug 306 with a gas leak. When there is no gas the A/C compressor will shut down. So even if you can't hear the clutch kick in/out doesn't necessarily mean its a compressor/electrical fault. Get the gas level tested first.

As soon as mine is re-gassed the compressor works again and all is fine for a week or so until it runs out again. They could never trace the leak and I gave up throwing money at it.

Not too hard on a 306. Either the pipes running from the compressor where they fix to the bodywork, they corrode inside the rubber mounting. Or the condenser.
Both weak points on the 306.

Thanks for all the replies.
The car will be visiting me for a few hours so I'll be able to have a look and listen.
It's booked in with a mobile specialist who comes recommended so let see.
I'll let you know of the outcome
