1997 1.8 Heater blower motor - a/c fitted - Dave_TD
Hi all,

I have bought an R-reg Escort 1.8 Ghia X for a very good price but it has a number of small problems. I will post a new thread for each problem so people with knowledge of the particular issue will spot the topic and hopefully offer some relevant advice!

According to the MoT history the car covered 8,000 miles last year but only 300 miles the year before. Total mileage is 81,000, the condition of the car supports this.

Firstly, the heater blower motor. This runs v-e-r-y slowly when I first start the engine, with a faint "poorly electric motor" noise. I should mention that all 3 fan speeds work but the fan is only running at a fraction of the speed it should, ie on speed 3 it starts off running at an audible 10 revolutions per second or so, on speed 2 it is slower and on speed 1 barely turning at all. After a few seconds' running it gradually slows down and stops altogether. There is no burning smell and I have removed and cleaned the multi plug under the bonnet, so I now suspect the motor may have breathed its last.

The Haynes manual only gives advice on how to remove the fan once the aircon system has been depressurized and the evaporator removed. Is there a way around this or is the fan and the evaporator one complete unit? The aircon seems to be in working order (one pipe runs cool, the other runs quite hot) but doesn't blow freezing cold so I would be looking at having the system recharged at some point anyway.

If anyone has had experience replacing this part I would be interested to hear from them.

Many thanks, Dave.

From your description ,it sounds like the heater motor is partially seized, probaly due to lack of use.Repacing the motor requires removal of the evaporator box, situated at the rear of engine bay, which means the system will need depressurising first. There is no access to the motor from inside the car. However it is possible that your car has a plastic inspection plate either screwed or clipped on top of the evap box that will give limited access to the motor/bearings to allow some lube to penetrate.hth

no need to deprssurize the air con unit.... remove the panel at the rear of the engine compartment also the wind screen wipers/ and grill add and the battery to gain better access to the bower box. open the top cover on top of the bower box( there is a x head screw to remove in here and two clips to release for the a/c matrix) removed box on the small box lhs of the bower box.. you can then remove all the metal clips holding the two halves of the blower together.
you should now be able to split the blower box in half.. and gain access to the blower motor, this is held by retaining strap secured by a x head screw hope this of some help changed my blower motor today

Snipquote - I'm sure you didn't really mean to quote the whole message you were replying to?

Heh, thanks brown for your reply. The original post was 18 months ago and I did indeed change the blower using your method. As it happened the aircon blew a high pressure hose shortly afterwards, I fixed that by getting a brass insert piece from a hydraulics supplier (for 2 quid, ha!) and jubilee clipping it in place. One 20 quid can of refridgerant / evil goo later and virtually full cooling effect was restored, still working today a year and a half later :-D
