hi i was wondering if any one can help , my 98 td escort is drinking the diesel its doing at last count about 18 mpg , also there is a lack of turbo boost, when i used to put my foot down in second the turbo would kick in at about 2.5 - 3 rpm , but now when i put my foot down all i get is plooms of black smoke in my rear view , could anyone recommend any parts that may need changing, its had new oil, oil filter glow plugs, diesel filter , air filter but its still the same , my friend has the exact same car , his accelerator is more responsive than mine , could it be a timing issue?

It's unlikely to be a timing issue unless the belts have been fitted incorrectly.
Black smoke is over-fuelling; so either the turbo isn't providing the extra air, or there's a loss of boost pressure - a burst intercooler hose or a stuck-open EGR valve could cause that.
Don't throw parts at it; get it tested to discover what's wrong first.

hi today i took off the airfilter , intercooler ect so i could gain access to the turbo , i started the engine and the turbo is spinning so i think thats ok , but the egr valve you mention is sooty and oily , also there is an oil like substance in the breather pipes from the top of manifold where its says turbo on it and in the small black pipes that run to the egr thing on the left hand side of the engine ,i attached a bycycle pump to these pipes and blew out the oil and also checked for leaks none found , theres like a lever on the turbo its very difficult to move does it opperate under air pressure or something cheers.

Oily mess in the intercooler pipes is fairly normal - although there shouldn't be any in the vacuum hoses that operate the EGR.
Really; you are only going to find this by structured testing, which need equipment, so you'll need to take it to somewhere that has it. The first test is EGR function; that needs a vacuum test pump. You could also try blanking that stainless pipe off for a quick test.
Then check the boost pressure. The actuator is controlled by vacuum and is very hard to move.

thanks you certainly know your stuff , but do you know what size the torx bolts are holding the egr , looks like i can only get maybe a torx allen key to fit as the rachet keeps catching it thanks

The only RF engine that I've got in here is a Mondeo one and the EGR bolts on that are a Tx40.

SOLVED IT .. it was all down to the egr valve not opening and choking the engine

It can't do any harm not opening; as suggested, it must've been stuck open. You didn't try blanking it off then?
