Hi
i am having a problem with Fuel intake on a BMW 318i (96).
I recently ran low on petrol, the petrol light had been on for about 15- 20 miles.
Any ways it would not start and was just juddering, then stallign if i applied the accelerator.
I then refueled using cans (the gauge reads just under half a tank!) but still the car will not start.
Could any one offer any suggestions to the problem and how to resolve, i would be most greatful.

Is it cranking? Is there a spark? Does the fuel pump run at key-on?

Screwloose
it is cranking and yes it has a spark, and if petrol is passed throught the intake pipe straight the engine, it will start. it would appear it is not receiving petrol from the tank.
how can i eliminate the fuel pump as being the problem? or is it possible the tank is blocked.

Turn the key on and listen for the sound of fuel passing through the fuel rail.
If you don't hear it; check the fuel pump fuse and listen under the back seat for the sound of the pump.
It may have run dry and seized.
