Hi
I've just had my battery disconnected for 30 mins whilst I cleaned some contacts under the seat for the air-bag system but when I re-connected it I now have a very strange fault (air bag light fault cured). When I turn the key on, the speedometer and rev counter dials rortate clockwise to maximum (with the engine off)
I just tried driving the car to see if that would reset things but noticed that the trip meter was advancing at a very high rate and, after about 2 miles noticed that about 25000 miles has been added to my odometer reading.
I'm suspected that the ECU has ""glitched", so disconneted the power again for abouit a minute and re-connected. The problem remained
Can anyone advise on this fault and also advise if, assuming the ECU is faulty, will the odometer reading as of earlier today on be stored somewhere so it can be reset to the corect value when this problem is cured, or am I now stuck with a very high (false) ododmeter reading) (which will kepp increasing a high rate until the problme is cured.
Any help appreciated - MOT due in about a month !!!!

In the fusebox, there should be a grey shunt marked HS. Pull it; wait 30 seconds and refit it with the key on. If that doesn't work, try all permutations of time and key position.
As to the mileage; it's only stored on the pod's chip, so you may be stuck with it. Speedo issues are common; but I've never seen one do that before.

Thanks for that screwloose. Have tried removing, and replacimg that but it made no difference. Also tried disconnecting battery again, but still no joy.
Have since learnt that the milage can be reset by a specialist and that the odometr reading is stored in the "dash cluster", so I'm guessing I'll have to cal to my local dealer tomorrow

What happens to the dials when you remove the shunt key-on?
I was trying not to mention the "mileage correction" specialists that advertize in the grubbier publications; I'd rather see them shot.
There are many companies that can repair these dash pods; they could also "correct" the mileage at the same time.

When I remove the shunt the odometer display goes out and the fuel gauge drops, but the rev counter and speedo dials stay at maximum. When I re-connect the shunt, the fuel gauge and odometer display come back on and both dials slowly reduce (juddering) to zero. When they get to zero they quickly shoot to maximum again.
When the dials are moving up and down they both do so at the same rate, almost as if they were showing the same value.
As this fault suddenly happened after I reconnected the power do you think that my intrument cluster has been damaged, probably by a "spike".
By the way thanks for the help you gave me some months ago re my 306 misfiring - you told me to change the coil packs, which I did and this cured the problem (and also cured a problem that my trip meter kept resetting to zero.

Ah-ha! You've had a Sagem coilpack go on it.... Occasionally, they can damage the instrument pod too.
Before going down that road; check that all earth cables to the battery are reconnected and that the engine is well earthed - particularly the bolt holding the earth cable to the gearbox. [Take it right out.]

There was only 1 cable to the battery and that was fine. I'll check the other earths but, as the fault only occurred after I reconnected the battery (after having no problems when the coil pack was spiking) it is likley that I need a new instrument cluster
Also, in addition to my rev counter and speedo showing maximum, my odometer is showing very high miles so if the module was replaced would it have a zero count or might the correct reading (from before the fault) be stored in the faulty cluster module and so be reset onto a new module.
Thanks for your ongoing help with this

This was one of the (many) faults I had on my old company owned 406 HDi. The needles would "flicker" between zero and maximum (or any point in between) when stationary, and miles would be wound on to the odometer. I did OK on fuel expenses for a while out of it though ;-)
It was fixed by replacing the instrument cluster (Pug dealer). Mileage was the same on the new cluster as the old one, so there is a way of doing it. I wouldn't claim to know how though.
Cheers
