While testing rear brakes for mot I had an assistant brake firmly with rear wheels in the air.
The wheels stopped but if I exerted a bit of pressure they moved?Applying the handbrake rendered the wheels solid.
I was worried about this failing mot yet it passed....what gives? Is this something to do with the brake pressure compensator ie: 70% braking force to the front and 30% to the rear(or thereabouts).
In layman terms what im asking is should the rear drums lock the wheels solid when carrying out the aforementioned test?

in the air...

If it's got load compensation, then the rear brakes make have little effect at full travel.

Cheers S...yes it has a load compensator!

If they came good on the rollers; then that's all I can think of.

Even with the suspension in the right position, you'll find that the rear brakes don't do a great deal!

A short car, with a non sporty centre of gravity height and a front heavy weight bias, and a legal need to avoid rear locking all conspire to make the front brakes do by far the majority of the braking on cars like this.

It passed the MOT?

My old KIA, barely scrapes through each MOT on foot applied rear brakes, but passes the handbrake efficiency with no problem. This is after I pull off the drums, roughen up the shoes and check the cylinders. It has a fixed pressure reducing valve!

Yeah Tom......it passed, kinda confused me a bit.
