The old Passat has a conventional non-multiplexed system and it's dead easy. I unclipped the bulb carrier on each side and soldered short lengths of wire to each relevant lamp connection busbar. Choose colours such that they will correspond with the 7 core socket cable and use proper connectors. Make a really sound earth connection under the lens fixing stud after cleaning down to bare metal and applying petroleum jelly to prevent future corrosion.
Two wires need to run accross the car to the LHS (3 if you enable the LH foglamp as I did). These fit neatly under the trim.
These cars are very easy to fit towbars to.
