Standards for road surfaces - L'escargot
Are there any standards for the surfaces of the various road classifications? Some parts of the A1031 running south from Grimsby are really poor. It must be the worst A road in Britain. I can hardly believe it's classed as an A road.

Not as such, I did quite a lot of research a year ago for a court case (which I won). The Highways Agency and Local Authorities "have a duty to maintain the fabric of the road". and there are guidelines for them to follow, The guidelines are only guidelines, but if they don't follow them, they would need to give a judge a very good reason.

There are standards for friction, but I am discussing with Essex Council the rights and wrongs of having a non-skid surface leading to a pedestrian crossing which end some 10 metres before the crossing and turns into a decorative brick surface with markedly inferior adhesion properties.

The result was a slide off my motorbike, a bill for repairs and whiplash.

Brian, were there any extenuating circumstances (on your part, that is)?

The local village idiot (honestly) stepped onto the crossing in front of the car I was following.
