The fact that the batteries are Ok doesn't necessaraly mean that it is working. I don't know whether yours is an infa red or radio system. If its infra red you can check it by pointing it at a camcorder or any TV camera, you should see illumination from it. You can get IR sensitive cards for testing TV handsets. If its a radio one, its a little more difficult but possible. On a scanner or 70 cms amateur radio reciever, you should be able to hear a signal from it at about 433 mhz. If the plipper is OK the reciever is probably faulty.

You can also point an infra-red device at a digital camera (even a mobile phone with a camera) or if you hold it against a radio tuned to MW you will hear some blips or beeps if it's working.

it is infra red and ive have tried it against my phone camera and it seems to be working ok

it's a 306 the problem could be numerous things and honestly if you really want rcl then have a reliable aftermarket kit fitted. common problems it could be,
key lost sync with sensor (easy fix)
rain leak from aeriel onto rcl sensor has killed it (can sometimes be revived with a cotton bud and lighter fluid)
rain from rear light leak got into c/l control unit an killed it
c/l control unit just died
failed wiring somewhere (drivers door loom common, other areas do happen randomly though)
if you've got a weekend to spare an don't mind getting dirty then you can try and identify things but it's not a nice job on a 306.
as said earlier though, does the central locking work fine from the key in the lock? if so then it would point to a sensor problem or sync problem.

yeah central locking works fine with the key, i'll have to have a look around next weekend and try and identify the prob.

if it works fine from the lock then the problem is either,
syncing between key/car
the key itself
the i/r sensor in roof (most likley)

Hi there I had this exact same problem with my old 306,
it turned out there were wires broken in the wiring loom between the door and Car,
i found this by carefully cutting a slit through the rubber to find several wires stretched and pulled appart on both doors,
It was a tricky job but i re soldered them and the central locking worked perfect,
On another net search i found that this seemed to be a common problem,
All the best

the door looms breaking is a common problem, but it isn't the op's problem as the central locking works fine with the key in the lock which shows the circuit for the motors is complete which leaves it as a problem with the remote part.
