Wonder if anyone can help?
When decelerating, squeaking similar to a wheel bearing can be heard from somewhere around the engine. If stopped with engine running no sound is heard. However, if the handbrake is applied and any gear is selected and the engine loaded, the squeaking can be initiated. We know it's not the clutch thrust bearing as this can be operated with the car out of gear and no squeak/rattle is heard. Any advice gratefully recieved.

I thought this was a non-optional extra with elderly Fords?
Seriously, water pump is possible although I'd have expected it to squeak on idle too (but not necessarily). Fan belt slipping?

Engine mounts or some part of the exhaust or manifolds???
I've just done the engine mounts on a 1990 Escort 1.6 where pulling off against the brakes was the best way to "twist" the engine and diagnose the fault.
It also caused the exhaust manifold gasket to fail. In a more serious case manifold studs can snap.
Yours could be the same problem.

The colleague who asked me to post this question has come back with the verdict: David's diagnosis was spot-on. Thank you both for your input.
