Car : Peugeot 1997 1.9 D-turbo phase 2 (115k miles)
Hello there, I have owned this car for around 6 months and recently have had a small problem.
When starting, the engine fires up no problem but for around 10 seconds it sounds as though the engine is misfiring slightly. Giving it a few revs usually cures the problem.
This only usually occurs when starting from cold and the problem dissapears after 10 seconds.
As I'm unsure about when the fuel filter was last changed, I thought I would start there but i'm unsure as to where it is located, and if any specialist tools are required.
Any help much appreciated.
Gary.

The fuel filter is in the round black canister mounted on the front of the engine, RH side as you look at it. Easy to change, just undo the four allen screws lift the lid off and put the new filter in, refit the lid, pump the primer a bit, and away you go. Except this invariably ends up with diesel split everywhere - including into the clutch if you're not careful!
Having said that, your problem is much more likely to be a failing glow plug, and changing those is not really a novice's job!

Thanks for the reply Richard.
I had ruled the glow plugs out as all four were renewed only 5 months ago. I'll let you know how I get on after changing the filter anyway.
Many thanks,
Gary.

Might be worth while having the injectors serviced-ask at a local diesel specialist-not a dealer.

The fuel filter is a very simple job, 5 mins, and 99% certain to cure your symptoms. bear in mind that if the car has been little used in the past, and left with a near empty tank, that there may be muck in the filter that sits around the fuel pipe in the tank.
Access it through the black saucer under the rear seat, but buy 2 x 15mm jubilee clips before you start, as you won't be able to re-use the clips that hold the pipes in place. Note the orientation of the tank lid, and use a mallet and broad-bladed screwdriver to loosen off the threaded ring that holds the lid in place.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Just noticed the fuel filter under the bonnet and there is a thin pipe which comes out of the bottom of the filter housing facing forwards.
The pipe is not connected anywhere else and is just dangling towards the floor.
I Wondered if this should be connected anywhere else and could possibly leaking air into the system.
Thanks,
Gary.

Mine has the same, also no pipe attached, and I did 100 miles in it this morning...
I think that's a water drain, if you turn the knurled ring it unscrews.

Hi people,
Just fitted filter and tried to start car but it won't fire.
How do I prime the system in order for fuel to get through?
Regards,
Gary

Just pump the primer bulb in the fuel line over the RH engine mount till it goes a bit harder - usually needs about 20 squeezes. Check while doing this the filter cover is not leaking, or it will never start.

Cheers Richard & others.
Got it going. Thanks very much. Hope this solves the poor starting issue. I will let you know.
Regards,
Gary

Slightly off subject but the same area, does anyone know what the white tap is on the bottom of the filter housing and which way the arrow should be pointing?
I have been having similar probs on starting and once running there is a feeling of the engine holding back, this is erratic but is happening more and more.
Any ideas on either question or are they related?
I have the same diesel engine btw.
Cheers

Wev,
Just had a look and a bit unsure as to what this tap is for, but is positioned at 2 o'clock & 8 o'clock.
|
the tap is a water drain valve for draining water from the diesel (water settles to the bottom). wev your problem could be several things, having one plug out would make it stutter for awhile from start. air ingress would do the same a search will show you how to check/fix these problems

Thanks for the help guys but i changed the fuel filter at the weekend and the small white tap is the diesel inlet as far as i can see. When i pump the priming bulb diesel is pumped into the filter chamber. I move the white screw the opposite way and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
I was wondering if this was a shut valve to stop fuel going back to the tank when you change filters maybe?
Anyway, the problem is still there and i'm none the wiser!
It only seems to happen when the engine gets hot.
Cheers
