VED on imports? - Tomo
Arising from another thread, I wonder where my Supra stands in respect of these retrospective tax rises. It was first registered in October 2001, but its date of manufacture is recorded as 1995 and its present tax rate - checked on the DVLA website - is £185, which suggests I get away with it (not so with Hyundai Coupe runabout, which seemingly is going to be £400 - preposterous for less than 3,000 miles per year).

I dare not ask the tax people directly, lest it gives some career minded chair-polisher an idea for a Brownie point suggestion!

There will be a quite lot of people with imports which fall into Supra's category, and who may be worrying.

I had the same situation with my previous car an imported 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four, imported in 2003. I did ask the DVLA and they confimed that the date of manufacture is the relevant one for VED, therefore based on engine size.

No need to worry about a big hike in tax, they wouldn't introduce a retrospective tax, would they?

Thanks Marc!

Nice car, by the way.

Interesting. I also asked DVLA the same question. As I understand it, the VED bands apply to cars first registered after March 2001. In my case it was a Supra manufactured before March '01 but first reg'd in the UK after March '01.

They told me that it is the date of registration that matters, but whether the VED due was determined by the old flat-rate system or the new CO2 emissions bands depended on whether a CO2 figure had been provided at the time of registration in the UK.

Since, as far as I am aware, there are no CO2 emissions figures for the Supra, flat rate it is.

It wasn't clear whether, if manufacturer's figures did exist, you were obliged to provide them, or whether, if they happened to be unfavourable you could just keep quiet, but since I too didn't want to spend too much time drawing people's attention to a loophole, I didn't press the question.

According to the Today program this morning the government sneakingly hidden in the small print have done away with the 2001 date and will be loading vehicles prior to that date with a very large increase in VED.

I think newer imports might get away with it too. How do they get a C02 figure to put on the V5 for a foreign spec car?

I know someone with a 2007 US-spec Mazdaspeed 3 (equivalent to UK MPS) should be band G on the C02 system but he pays the flat rate.
