I'm sure one of the learn'ed readers on this forum will be able to help. Having searching various dutch tax sites I'm still not sure of the actual answer.
I'm considering buying an old Alfa Romeo from a dutch marque specialist. The car is 42 years old and I am keen to understand whether VAT is payable in the Netherlands or whether as the car is for export the car is purchased without the VAT and I pay the UK VAT on the purchase price when the car is re-registered in the UK.
Thanks in advance.

No VAT or other duty payable on import of a second-hand car from an EU country. Check the DVLA website for registration info.

What model Audikid?
Keep us informed if you go ahead. Good luck.

I would check the car and it's history very carefully. The climate in Holland is no kinder to cars that the UK one. If it's early life was in the south of France or southern Italy is could be rust free. Unless the body is immaculate, or it is an extremely rare model, the hassle of importing and LHD hardly make it worth the bother.

Thanks for the advice - I think the climate is worse in Holland that the uk !! The car is actually from southern italy and has been very well looked after - it just happens that the specialist is in Holland. Its a 2 owner boat tail Spider that whilst not mint has a fantastic patina and full history and providence.
Only issue is the terrible euro exchange rate that is currently proving a blocker ....

oldnotbold is right - No VAT or other duty payable on import to UK of a second-hand car from an EU country. Is it registered on a Dutch number plate?
