2.5 V6 Elite with 110k on the clock - on a few occasions recently the gearbox has held on to 2nd gear too long and when it changed up it has done so with a thump. One time this was a very hard thump and the fault message 'automatic gearbox' appeared on the computer display. Any ideas would be welcomed

Get the car fault code read. Unless it is obviously something cheap like an easy to access sensor or something then get the gearbox fluid changed.
If that doesn't help you're probably looking at a new or recon gearbox which is unlikely to be financially sensible on a 98 Omega. In which case, get AA cover and drive it until it dies.

has the g/box ever had as service !, it's surpposed to have the band adjusted and a change of oil every once in a while cant remember at what mileage but at 110k it should have been done at least once
|
60 k or 80k depending on year, so it's comming up for its second change !!!!!!

What do you adjust?
Not familiar with this box just interested to know? what you do to it besides change the oil and clean/change filter..

when the sump is removed there is a dome held on with three bolts this is removed and there is a screw with a lock nut the nut is released then the screw is tightened to a set torque and backed off five turns and locked off at that, this sets the brake band. replace dome, replace screen(filter), refill sump, refit sump (carefully) run up to op tempreture and then remove the level plug to drain the excess oil out (the oil must be at or above set temp)

Hi Topbloke,
Read with interest on how to change oil in 2.5 Omega autobox .My "box" is slipping
in 3rd and 4th (Ok in others) I have changed ATF (Using dextron type two)
(About 4.5 litres) and cleaned filter.
ATF was dirty brown and filter fairly dirty (Including parts of a small gasket!!)
After refilling to fill plug (Engine running) still same problem. I read about your advice on re-torquing the brake band. Do you think this could cure problem ? If so what is the
specified torque it should be tightened to ? Topbloke please advise!! Thank you
|
year and model, engine etc will be a great help then i can advise, when you state cleaned filter i assume that you mean changed !!!!!!!!!! dont know if will cure your problem but cant do any harm
|
>>Do you think this could cure problem ?
Almost certainly not.
This is much more likely to be a failed clutch pack (in the higher gears, there's usually one ratio where all both clutch packs are engaged, and the whole epicyclic gear train rotates as one solid item 1:1 ratio)

Hi Topbloke,
Thanks for reply the car is a 94 (M) and is a 2.5V6 CDX . Its a four speed box.
If tightening band doesn't work is there any other advise or is it re-con box time?
Thanks again Uri.

will sort details and post soon, as for what if that dont cure it autobox specialist me thinks, but yes recon box time

The correct fluid is Dexron IIIG otherwise you can get a shudder on light throttle upshifts. Internal leak down of fluid pressure is a common problem with these. The best thing to do is get a used one of the same part number and application rebuilt somewhere like Oakdenes and then have a straight swap done, unless you can find somewhere with one on a shelf. The only thing is, they actually often have very bear units on the shelf and transfer rather a lot of your existing parts over such as the torque converter and housing, and the output assembly at the opposite end which accounts for about 1/3rd of what you would consider the whole gearbox. When I needed one, I was quoted around £900-£122 for an exchange unit.

here go's, remove sump, remove the dome, think there is four bolts mind the gasket and the oil in the dome, you should see a long threaded bit and a lock nut, release nut, screw the threaded bit in tighten to 5nm or 4lb/ft, then unwind the threaded bit five complete turns and lock of with the nut, refit dome, sump, and refill easy as that

Thanks for finding info,
I Shall try that and let you know how I get on.
