2000 2.0 - Keeps Cutting Out When Warm - brystubbers
we have a 2000 golf cabriolet colour concept which when warm keeps cutting out. The rev counter drops to zero, the oil light flashes then the battery light flashes and car dies. You have to stop the car, key out and then re start it but as engine gets warmer it cuts out more frequently. Read about relay 109 and garage said mine doesnt have a relay 109 and told me to change relay 30 which i did but it still isnt fixed ?? any ideas please would be greatfully recieved ?? its totally random but when cars cold in the morning you can drive it for about 20 mins before the fault starts

The volume in the subject header has been turned down! Also added the year & engine info as per the 2 ignored sticky posts

GOLF CABRIOLET KEEPS CUTTING OUT WHEN WARM - Screwloose

engine no AGG

2000 is very late for an AGG - even on a cab. This could be a failing ignition switch - common on the MkIII Golf; or just possibly a dashpod fault.

I think they used up old engines on the colour concept range, def an AGG though. If its a failing ignition switch or a dashpod fault what do i need to order / change to fix it please ?

Neither are a DIY proposition; the switch is a pig to remove and the dash may contain the immobilizer on that year.

Don't think this is a relay; you've done 30, which is the usual one, but the way the oil light behaves suggests a loss of feed on the 15 line from the switch.

To test for loss of 15-line output from the switch; rig up a dash warning light, or similar, to fuse 15 - which will give a visual indication of the status of that key-on circuit.

Do you have any success in getting this fixed?

My wife's 2000 Golf Cabrio 2.0 with the same engine, is showing the exact same problems. No-one seems able to fix it, fault never shows up when the garage has it in.

However does cut out to the extent my wife will no longer drive the car...

Have already changed the ecu relay, no faults showing on vagcom....

My wife's X-reg colour concept cab is doing same thing. Did you ever get it sorted? Runs fine until Oil temperature reaches 76 degrees then conks out & won't restart until cooled down for at least 30 mins. RAC man was called the first time & he said it had a spark and fuel was being delivered. Still had to tow me home though!

So far I've changed the spark plugs, plug leads, coil lead, coil, ECU relay, fuel pump relay, crank position sensor, distributor, distributor cap and the rotor arm.

My local VAG specialist has had VAG-COM on it while it's cut out & there's no codes. They are also in the dark.

Did the previous posters get to the bottom of the problem or can anyone else suggest something else to try?
