Hi
Our Punto's cylinder head Gasket is knackered, and the car is economically viable to repair. It is quite a long way from the Garage where we are buying the new car, so I am thinking it would be most cost effective to scrap it. I am worried about the process as what happens with regrds to registered ownership.
has any one any advice on
What I should expect as scrap value ( nicely kept, family owned Punto 60sx, 62K)
The process with the documents/ keys
any alternatives worth investigating, just want rid really, do not want bother with Tyre kickers etc
Cheers

If the car is otherwise OK, why not stick it on ebay with an honest description of what's good and what's bad. A DIYer may pay you more than what a scrapper will.

In January I got £80 for a P-reg Micra with a bent rear axle, a punto would probably be worth about the same.
The scrapyard fills in the 'new owner' part of the V5 which you send to the DVLA.
Make sure you do this or you're liable for any road tax, fixed penalty notices, etc

Hadn't thought about Ebay, suppose they could turn up and then not pay though.
What about the Road Tax, it has 4 months left, do I keep the disc and claim a refund??

I might just be interested - I've a Punto with some front damage, but a good engine. I'm in S Oxfordshire.
Ebay is good, and your chances of getting a non-payer are fairly slim. With some MoT on it, it'll go. Cash in the RFL today (1 April tomorrow). So long as it's postmarked today they will give you the refund for April and all after that. You can download the form from the DVLA website.

Thanks, just spotted it needs to be sent today, its on my inlaws drive so will not get there before last post!
The car started overheating ironically while driving to pick up SWMBO on the way to collect My car from the garage last Thursday. It was my parents car from new, we had it off them 3 years ago.
The garage tested the gases, said their was evidence of CHG damage. It had a new radiator 5 months ago, but has had no hot air from the heater for 2 months and there was an airlock in the system last week.
They said it would be ok to carry on a bit, but it started overheating again, so I have gone a bought a new car the weekend.
Its normally used daily, 20 mile round trip.

No reason why an in-law couldn't fill in the form and send off on yr behalf if they have access to the interweb.
As I said, I may be interested - is it within striking distance of S Oxfordshire?

We flogged our Punto 55 with knackered HG as a px against a new car, dealer was quite happy to take it ... it was a slow and painful drive there, with a couple of stops when the temp gauge climbed high ...

a couple of stops when the temp gauge climbed high ...
"ee you were lucky, you 'ad a temperature gauge"
(my wife's Punto doesn't - only an over-temp warning light, that never came on, even when diagnostic software showed water temp at 120 degrees!)

Hi oldnotbold
its in Kingswinford, near stourbridge. I don't know if thats any use to you?

has had no hot air from the heater for 2 months and there was an airlock in the system last week.
No hot air from the heater is the give away. Garages will typically take £250-£280 to do a Punto head gasket. Worth considering if car otherwise good. Trouble is after 2 months, the block could be eroded at the point where the gasket was leaking.

Ask the garage how much they will give you px and have it towed there...............
|
Misterp - the Punto we have is going to be looked at on Monday to assess the damage to the bodywork. Can I get back to you when that is complete? I guess I'd come up to you, and attempt to drive it back, and call the RAC when it's had it....

I didn't part ex it and am now the proud father to a new Getz ( well its the wifes really)
if this were entirely up to me then of course Monday would be fine. However I have consider the diplomatic situation with the inlaws on whose drive it sits ( i'm sure you know how older retired folks can fuss, or perhaps it's just my relatives!)
I will see them tonight and guage the situation, If they want away, I will probably have to scrap it Saturday. I am at work otherwise for another week after that, so may be able to buy a bit more time if Something 'crops up' the weekend ;@).
My local garage quoted £400 for CHG ( and they ARE generally a good, honest garage who I've had contact with for years on and off, as have other family members)
I will update you.
regards

Very TIC.
Some Punto owners have become desperate.........

MP - I've been quoted £250 to swap your dud engine out and put in my good one, and assuming that yours needs little/no work for an MoT, that could make for an attractive option, as the one I have needs a fair bit doing to it, which could easily exceed £250. The only thing I have to factor in is getting to you, and getting it back.
Quite understand if the in-laws want shot of it sooner. My email is lollingdon clara.co.uk

presume with an @ before clara ?

Yes - the forum software removed my "insert the @ sign" as I'd encased it with the back and fwd arrowhead characters!
