ive had this car a month and been reading that the mpg is shocking on this car just done a 60 mile run on the motorway and got ,1st 30 miles at 75mph at 27mpg on the dash read out ,then the next 30 miles back home at 60mph was 40mpg is this good i think it is ,whats your thoughts

My thoughts are that it sounds pretty poor to me - I'm looking at a Focus/Mondeo petrol for a second car and according to HJ's road test of the Mondeo 1.8 at 90 - 110 mph it was recording 33 mpg so that makes your Focus figures look decidedly dodgy. Mind you looking through reader reviews on other sites fuel consumption of the Focus petrols doesn't attract much praise. I had a Passat TDi that at a steady 75 mph would record 60 mpg easily.

That sounds pretty bad to me. It gets 40-41mpg on the combined cycle, so it should be a lot higher than this on the m/way. At 60mph I would expect no less than 50mpg. I thought the 1.6's were supposed to be economical anyway?

driving a 1.6 auto a couple of weeks ago, I was getting about 45mpg at a steadyish 60mph.
|
Considering that the computers are always optimistic, 40mpg was probably really 38mpg and at a steady 60mph I would expect going on 45mpg.
But, an overall distance of 60 miles is not really enough to gauge mpg. Needs fuel tank brim-to-brim measurements.

ok ill do a brim to brim test next week end on a trip to wales and let you know what i found out
if these mpg figures are shocking is there anything that maybe wrong with the engine or managment system any thoughts on this and thanks for the replies and any help

Sounds rather thirsty to me. Some years ago I had a manual pre-cat Carlton. This would average mid to high thirties in mixed motoring and ~45 mpg on long motorway runs.

Sounds pretty thirsty to me too, under the same conditions my 2.0 Turbo (petrol) Audi TT does 40mpg and 48-50mpg respectively. If you are doing steady speed motoring then you have a real issue, if on the other hand you are braking frequently and alternating between 50 and 80 significantly then it's less surprising that your economy seems poor.

I have an Audi A3 1.6 - I am getting about 39MPG which is a good mix of driving - my journey to wok is 12 miles - about 6 motorway plus mix of a road and urban so at a steady 60 I would have thought you would have got a lot more that 40, although a colleague has a 1.8 focus and is less than happy with average of 27 mpg

My first thought is that you should measure your fuel consumption in a better way.
My next thought is that my old banger (2L petrol, 12 years old) will do better than that!
|
Came home along the M4 tonight in my "enemies of the earth" 3 litre, 6 cylinder, auto Legacy and set the computer from Swindon to Slough, around 50 miles at 70 to 80 mph with quite a lot of of braking and acceleration due to the heavy traffic and it showed 30.1 mpg which I know from brim to brim fills is about 5% optimistic.
|
|
I owned a 1.6 Mk 2 Focus for 18 months, it averaged a slightly disappointing 38 to 39 mpg over 15000 miles, measured by brimming.
|
My 1.8 petrol Mondeo Zetec averages 37 mpg over the 40k miles I have had it. On a run I expect the low 40s. These figures are measured at the pump.
OP's figures indicate some kind of fault surely?

Hi, as per my thread elsewhere I have the same car which I am trying to get out of as quickly as possible!
You do not have any faults-if anything 40 mpg is a great result from this car!
My average is now down to 31mpg, and best I have seen is 39. This Focus is a great car but thirsty if used as designed-ie with the 115ps 1.6 there is little appreciable power until 4000+ revs so if you want to drive at a reasonable pace then economy suffers badly. If you try driving gently you may as well get out and walk!!
So, in summary, you are unlikely to get better mpg, usually a lot worse. If you can live with this then fine-enjoy the rest of the car. If not, try to chop it in quick for a diesel like I am!
