2000 1.8 20v se; disconnected hose - passat 20v se
I have accidentally disconnected a clear thin plastic hose, 7 mm o/d, 380mm length, having a black plastic elbow connector on one end. The end (approx 50mm) without the connector, is blackened with carbon or oil deposits. The hose was located in the centre section of the engine compartment where the battery is located. I think the hose may relate to the operation of the fuel consumption computer, which now fluctuates erratically. Can anyone explain where/how I should reinstall the hose? Thanks.

That sounds very like the gas venting hose from the sealed battery.

Look at the centre of either end of the battery lid for a small, horizontal, hole to fit the elbow into. One end will have a blanking plug, the other should be open.

No connexion to the computer reading; that could be something else.

Thanks Screwloose, your a star! Your rapid diagnosis is spot on. I obviously disconnected the hose when removing the old battery - has always been straightforward on my previous cars, but a bit of a pig on this passat. Come to think of it, I have never come across a battery vent hose before. Thanks again.
